Old School tells the story of three friends who come up with a crazy notion to start a fraternity way into their adulthood. After catching his girlfriend in some kinky sex-party with strangers, Mitch (Luke Wilson) buys a house near his old alma mater, Harrison University. Mitch’s best friends Frank (Will Ferrell) and Beanie (Vince Vaughn) decide to throw him a party to cheer him up. Mich-A-Palooza is a huge success that includes a performance by the Doddfather Snoop Dogg. Unfortunately, it is so popular it gets noticed by the powers that be at the campus. Dean Pritchard (Jeremy Piven) and former childhood friend they use to harrass, soon arrives and informs the trio that the house is zoned for social services and community housing only. All seems lost until Beanie comes up with the genius idea to start a new fraternity. From there the mayhem begins as the gang tries to make the fraternity legit and mold it into an outlet to escape the doldrums of their adult lives.
Along with the Unrated version of the film, there are so many fun bonus material you may get tempted to watch the extras instead of the film. First up is the feature commentary track that is actually quite great with the director and Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn. Sometimes commentary tracks with comedies are way too serious yet this one is exactly how it should be. You can clearly hear the respect and the enjoyment they all have working and hanging out with one another. I suspect there may have been alcohol involved as they watched the movie.
But that’s just the beginning, there are eight deleted scenes in the section entitled From The Cutting Room Floor. Many of the scenes are as funny as the ones that appeared in the film. The Outtakes & Bloopers are also worth checking out for a laugh. There’s a weird fake interview spoof of Inside the Actors Studio with Will Ferrell playing both himself and host James Lipton. The spoof has it’s moments but not as funny as one would hope. Last but not least there is an Old School Orientation that is a thirteen minute featurette on the making of the film.
Old School is one of those rare comedies that is as funny the first time as the fifteenth time. The balance of the different comedy styles work great to create a modern day classic. These stars were at the top of their game with this film back in 2003 and they have continued to produce solid hit films today.
