Kenneth Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) accepts a low paying job at his old high school as head coach of their basketball team. Back in his day, he was a star on their team still holding many of their records. Coach Carter from the beginning expects high standards and sets out new rules for the team to abide, including a contract for the players to sign. The unusual contract states all players must maintain a 2.3 grade point average (school only normally require the 2.0 GPA), they must attend class and sit in the front and not hide in the back and on game day they must wear jackets and ties. Coach Carter’s heart is in the right place but soon finds friction among the community and the school it’s self.
Coach Carter is a well made story based on the true story of a man standing in own ground. The film takes a few licenses such as having the story take place in 2004 instead of the actual 1999, but in general the film is an accurate portrayal of what Coach Carter did for the future of these students.
Along with the film, we have a few bonus features for you to enjoy as well. Whenever a film is based on a true story, it’s crucial the bonus material should not just focus on the film but the real people it is based on. First up we have Coach Carter: The Man Behind the Movie, a twenty minute feature on the real Coach Kenneth Carter. This is a great little documentary told by the real life people including Coach Carter. There’s also several other documentaries including a behind the scenes on the process of bringing the film to the big screen, one on the actors learning to play basketball, writing the film, six deleted scenes and a music video.
The story takes us on the quest to do the right thing regardless of who opposes it. Coach Carter is a powerful film that makes you believe there are true heroes out there trying to make a difference in the world. Samuel L. Jackson steps into the shoes of Kenneth Carter and proves he can take on characters and stories bigger and better then Snakes on a Plane. Coach Carter is now available on blu-ray and is worth checking out.
