The Truman Show in this day and age doesn’t sound so far fetched as it did back in 1998. These days T.V. programming is fifty percent reality-based and the concept not only sounds feasible but one suspects that the networks have been trying to find a way to produce it onto the little screen ever since. The Truman Show directed by Peter Weir starts comedian Jim Carrey in a reality show soap opera that follows the life of Truman Burbank from infant into adulthood. The film wooed the critics and did quite well at the box office proving Jim Carrey could be more then a rubbery faced slapstick comedian. The film now arrives on blu-ray looking better then ever.

Truman Burbank was picked out of five unwanted babies to become a TV star. Originally thought to be only a show for one season becomes such a phenomena, that a whole channel is dedicated to the world of Truman. An artificial city called Seahaven is conceived to encompass the world of Truman. Film Producer Christof (Ed Harris) designs a gigantic enclosed virtual world in a vast studio that can control everything in Truman’s environment – even the weather. There are cameras everywhere to capture every second from a dog collar cam to the mirror in his bathroom. The show is a twenty four hour non-stop program that is dedicated every single second of the artificial world that is Truman. From Truman’s friends, his home life, his first love and the lost of his father, the world tune’s in every day to get a glimpse into Truman’s celluloid world. Even if the world around him is artificial and scripted, Truman is not – he’s real.
Truman now married and living in a world of routine seems content and happy in his existence. However, after a series of unusual events including a studio light falling from the sky to his car radio accidently picking up the film maker’s radio, Truman has an epiphany that maybe his world isn’t as random as it seems. Truman starts to look around in his environment with new eyes and starts to question what he sees.
How’s it going to end? Well you’ll have to tune in and find out. The film is now available on blu-ray comes with the same bonus material the standard DVD contains. It’s unfortunate they didn’t try to fill the blu-ray with some new bonus features. There’s plenty of room for it for sure. First up, a commentary track with the director and Jim Carrey himself would have been a nice new edition. A new revisited retrospect documentary on the film would have also been nice to see produced for the blu-ray release. Still, the bonus features are nice and worth checking out. From the two part making of the film, the visual effects feature and the deleted scenes are all worth your time. None are in HD and the deleted scenes could have been cleaned up and presented in a more pristine version for the blu-ray but all are still worth viewing. Only the two theatrical trailers are here in HD.
The Truman Show was a film ahead of it’s time. Jim Carrey and Ed Harris as his God-like father figure truly shine in this ground breaking film. The Truman Show although at times a little implausible, is a thought provoking film that is as relevant today as when it came out in 1998. How soon before we really do have a twenty four hour show dedicated to a person’s life and should we even want it or watch it? Stay tuned.
