The Tudors is a Showtime original series based loosely on the reign of the English monarch Henry VIII during his early years. The title of the show refers to Henry VIII’s dynasty – the Tudor Dynasty. The show premiered back in April 2007 and is one of Showtime’s most successful debuts.

The first season of this sexy historical drama follows the period of Henry VIII's (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) early reign and his desire to make his mark in history. From Henry VIII's quest to go to war with France, his alliance with Spain, the pressure of trying to father an heir and his equally driven sexual passion with a revolving door of women. This first season proved Showtime had a delicious riveting series even though critics often panned it for its historical inaccuracies.

Season two in turn toned down the racy aspect of the show and focused more on the political aspects of the period. Perhaps the change was in response to the negative press or perhaps the show really wanted to focus more heavily on the Western political history of the time. Regardless, this season we are watch when England breaks from the Church of Rome and Henry becomes head of his own church. This Season proves to be a rough one for the women in Henry’s life. From his neglected Queen Katherine of Aragon (Maria Doyle Kennedy), to Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer), both women are doom by history and doomed by the completion of the season.

Along with all ten episodes of season two we have just two features that focus on the show it’s self. The Tower of London featurette focuses on the last days of Anne Boleyn. Actress Natalie Dormer who portrays Boleyn in The Tudors and Tudor historian Tom Stammers take a guide through the Tower of London and talk about the history and the accuracy of the show’s portrayal of Boleyn’s execution.

The other feature entitled Descendants of Henry is a quick quirky fun featurette on the modern day descendants of King Henry VIII. Through interviews and some history we meet some of today’s real relatives.

The Tudors has proven a hit for Showtime. It’s a shame that they didn’t spend some extra time on the bonus features for the season two DVD. For a show created out of history, one would think there would be a feature on the real time period instead of a few frivolous featurettes. Instead the remaining bonus material is promoting their other shows like Californication, Dexter and United States of Tara. Maybe season three on DVD will provide better bonus material.
