The Bisco live shows are anything but ordinary; playing to an exceptionally happy audience Saturday made up of dancing gypsies, happy couples making out, and glow sticks galore. Among the immense space of the Congress Theater, one sure thing was that everyone was there to “melt face,” as many fans call it.
What’s unique about the Bisco is their ability to incorporate such diverse music genres into various melodies. Combining rock and roll, jazz, funk, and electronic, the Bisco are very different than the typical “jam-band,” prototypes. There choice of compositions justifies their strong sense of appreciation towards various styles of music. They have the ability to go above and beyond the realm of long-standing “rock” jams, by vastly encompassing heavy beats and electronic elements – which keep the crowd dancing for hours.
Performing two outstanding sets, band mates Marc Brownstein (Bass) and Jon Gutwillig (Guitar ) seemed to be having the most fun. Smiling and laughing throughout the evening, Brownstein and Gutwillig have a rock-off, as mid-song they both jump to face each other and jam-on to various solos. Towards the end of the evening, shoeless Gutwillig walks to the front of the stage, guitar in hand, doing a Moonwalk-esque dance for fans.
Prefuse 73 and RJD2 opened for Bisco, but it was after the impressive and lengthy encore, fans shuffled into the ballroom to find a DJ set up and spinning as they attempted to exit the building. After parties took place at fans homes and Chicago’s late night venue the Kinetic Playground, keeping everyone up until the wee morning.
With a long established record of fans after breaking into the scene during the mid-90’s, these Pennsylvania based-boys aren’t cutting it short in 2009. A prolonged list of nationally scheduled tour dates has been posted on their website and is still growing. In addition to their already dynamite tour, is the roll of impressive opening acts, include Future Rock, Break Science, OTT and many more.
