City on the Brink Print E-mail

There are days when Chicago seems like a powder keg ready to blow. Friday afternoon was no exception. As I walked out onto Michigan Ave. to get lunch I was greeted by a loud angry mob holding picket signs and screaming. As anyone that lives or works around Michigan Ave. will tell you this is a surprisingly common event. From anti-Israel protesters to Goodbye Bush rallies the plaza on the 400 block of Michigan Ave. sees some pretty heavy action.

Today was different though. This Friday the scales of the city tipped just a little bit more toward madness. Over a hundred people, all white and very obviously upper class, congregated in front of the God Bless America statue in Pioneer Court chanting and distributing anti-Obama propaganda. Based on the loud chanting and protest signs the angry crowd wanted nothing more than the immediate removal of President Barack Obama.

The reason? The bailout, and consequently, the stimulus package would take money from their pockets. Now let’s take a step back for and truly appreciate the irony of the situation. After eight years of comfortable living under the Bush administration President Obama has stepped in with a wide sweeping stimulus with the hopes of jumpstarting the failing economy Bush left behind. In order to do this properly money will have to come from somewhere. Rather than take from those in need, and there are many in need right now. President Obama has chosen to start heavier taxation on those that have plenty.

America is changing. The days of the ruling white upper class seem to be coming to an end. That is why it is all the more fitting that the protest took place under the American Gothic statue in Pioneer Court. The statue, based on the famous painting, is meant to embody the life of hardworking middle and lower class Americans. It is those that the God Bless America statue represents that are fighting the most during these trying times.

Reason and sensibility have gone completely out the window. Earlier Friday morning a Wal-Mart employee working the night shift claimed that he “could not take it any more” and lit himself on fire in a public parking lot in the suburbs. Every day the unemployment rate skyrockets and homes become foreclosed due to lack of funds. Our Governor’s and Senators seem to be on a one-way ticket to prison the moment they enter office. We truly do live in desperate times.

Why than would those so well off go to so much effort to stop a President that is making a real effort to stem the tide of destruction? Armed with signs and propaganda the crowd was determined to make its presence heard. The megaphone and mock stage certainly helped. A genuine sense of anger pulsated through the mob as parents brought their children to show them what the world was really about.

It should be noted that the protest only lasted until a little after noon. It most likely could not go any further because everyone had to get to work. Sometimes the universe has a wicked sense of humor.
