John Lennon, Trent Reznor, Rage Against The Machine-these are a few of the great masterminds in the music world to date. They are artistic and patriotic, making their voices heard on political, domestic, and cultural issues. In addition to their strong declarations is their complexity and originality that stands firm in each album and performance. They set the standard for what it takes to rise above the rest. They put forth new initiatives, raise the bar in creativity, and demonstrate unequivocal talent; these musicians have become legends.

The newest addition to add to that list of stand-out performers are the diverse duo from Washington D.C. - Thievery Corporation. New to some and embedded in the lives of others, one can expect to be enlightened after a Thievery Corporation show. Their lyrics are full of ethnic diversity featuring English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese to name a few. Promoting their newest, most politically spoken album Radio Retaliation they are conquering one country at a time-taking on a chunk of national and international tour dates.
As they performed last Friday at Chicago’s Argon Ballroom the audience was taken on a voyage around the world. A melting pot of various stylings of Brazilian Bossa nova, to Indian Hindustani, and Sub-Saharan African folk music resonated throughout the venue. Multiple light boards, a company of over ten performers, and an array of musical instruments illuminated the stage, complimenting the sounds and transforming the venue into a multicultural experience. Various beats ricocheted off the wall, while fans dressed in vibrant colors and lush textures dances around to the delicate blend of music.
What establishes Thievery Corporation from other electronic blended bands is their unconventional approach. Not only do they mix rock, soul, and funk but, they dig deep into the culture of music. Producing an array of tracks all so unique, blended into their own fusion of multiculturalism, in turn setting them apart from the rest. They’re individualistic, they take risks and explore new mediums---and it works. A crowded house on a Friday only proved the success of the duo and how far they have come over their fourteen year parade.
Rob Garza and former lounge manager Eric Hilton are the faces that make up Thievery Corporation. Collaborating with a vast range of supporting artists to remixing musical masters such as David Byrne, Norah Jones, and Jim Morrison. With five studio albums out, multiple tracks have been featured in a variety of films, TV shows, and commercials.
It doesn’t matter if you’re an electronic, rap, rock, or folk fan. With their diversity and eclectic styling’s, there is a taste for everyone’s’ fancy. Be sure to go to their website for a lit of upcoming tour dates.
