In 2006 the James Bond franchise set out to retool and introduced us to a new more rugged and real James Bond. Daniel Craig proved he was worthy of holding the license to kill and earned his 007 status with critics and fans alike. Quantum of Solace had a lot to live up to after the critical and commercial success of Casino Royale. The filmmakers decided to take an unusual route for their 22nd Bond film and do a continuation of the story line that originated in Casino Royale. Daniel Craig proved his debut was not a fluke and Quantum of Solace is now coming out on DVD and blu-ray to add to your Bond collection.

When we last left James Bond in Casino Royale, James had realized there was a message from Vesper with a phone number and a name- Mr. White. Bond soon catches up with Mr. White at his beautiful villa in Lake Garda, Italy. After shooting him in the leg, Bond is seen hovering over Mr. White with a rather large gun. Jump to Quantum of Solace and Bond is being pursued by a series of bad guys with Mr. White tucked in the trunk for safe keeping. After foiling their attempts to stop Bond, he arrives in Siena, Italy with Mr. White to interrogate him in regards to his organization that is only known as Quantum. Before Bond or M (Judi Dench) has a chance, M’s bodyguard proves to be a traitor and through a scuffle and chase, Mr. White escapes.
So begins Bond’s pursuit for the answers to Quantum. Along the way he encounters a beautiful troubled soul named Camille Montes (Olga Kurylenko) in Haiti that shares his desire for revenge and even finds time for a little rendezvous with a fellow agent in Bolivia. Will Bond finally find his solace and be able to put his pain to rest? Time will tell in this action packed sequel that travels all over the globe in search of the answers. Daniel Craig continues to deliver his modern take on a tougher yet more vulnerable version of the 007 character.
The film looks fantastic in HD on the blu-ray edition. The bonus material for Quantum of Solace however is actually quite disappointing. In the past, MGM studios have always been good in releasing solid bonus features with their James Bond DVDs. Quantum of Solace however isn’t one of those releases that holds up with their previous editions. Casino Royale originally came out as a humble one disc set with very few extras. But MGM has since released it properly with all the bonus material it should have delivered the first time around. One suspects that much like its predecessor, this is just a teaser release with a two-disc Quantum of Solace Collector’s Edition inevitably being released in the near future.
First up we have Bond on Location that is a descent feature on the making of the film in HD. Clocking in at 24 minutes this is the longest of the bonus material provided here and yet it still feels a little too short. There are also 5 featurettes entitled Start of Shooting, On Location, Olga Kurylenko and the Boat Chase, Director Marc Forster, The Music. These are all provided in HD but are way too short at about 3 minutes each with some of the material even appearing in the Bond on Location feature. These featurettes come off as frivolous fluff pieces that masquerade as genuine bonus material. With that said, the Crew Files that kind of hides in the bonus material, is a nice collection of featurettes with the behind the scenes players that don’t often get their moment in the spot light. Rounding out the bonus material is the music video of “Another Way to Die” with Jack Black and Alicia Keys and the 2 trailers for the film.
Quantum of Solace has proven Daniel Craig is worthy of stepping into the shoes of James Bond. Although not as successful as his debut, Quantum of Solace is a solid action packed edition to the James Bond franchise. Let’s hope in the next installment the filmmakers will consider adding a few elements like some of the fun gadgetry and more Bond girls that have always been fixtures in the James Bond lore.
