Penny (Miley Cyrus) is a teenage girl and with her dog Bolt (John Travolta), is TV stars in their own hit show. Each week Penny and Bolt have to battle against the dastardly plans of the evil “Green Eyed Man,” the one and only Doctor Calico. In order to keep the realism in the show, the network from the onset decide to shoot the show in a way of not letting Bolt know that it’s all just pretend. So each week Bolt believes he is foiling all the villainous treachery with his super powers, which includes everything from super strength and his piece of resistance- the “Super Bark”.
When the television networks threaten to cancel the series, the show’s producers decide to create the classic cliffhanger situation. The scene is shot with Penny being kidnapped by the “Green Eyed Man,” which in turn means Bolt will have to spend a night thinking Penny is truly in danger until the morning shoot. That doesn’t sit well for Penny whose love for her dog is no performance. That goes ten fold for Bolt who decides he must find a way to escape his traveling cage the crew has just placed him in. Bolt does escape the studios by accidently falling into a box that is being shipped out of Hollywood. The box arrives at its destination and our canine hero finds himself all alone in the streets of New York City. However, that doesn’t change his determination to find his “person” and save the day.
So begins Bolt’s journey out of the celluloid world and into the real word. Along the way he meets a devious cat named mittens and a star struck hamster named Rhino. Will Bolt be able to use his not so super powers to travel back to Hollywood and reunite with Penny? That’s all part of the fun in Disney’s latest animated film that is surely to become a classic.
Now available on blu-ray, Bolt looks pristine and along with the feature comes a nice assortment of bonus material for you to enjoy. Even though I was a bit disappointed and surprised they didn’t include a commentary track, the featurettes seem to make up for it and fill in all the gaps. If you are a Miley Cryrus (Hannah Montana) fan then you will these behind the scenes features. The include the making of the Duet “I Thought I Lost You” with co-star John Travolta, the music video for the song and the Act, Speak! The Voices of Bolt. The later includes all the people that provided the voices in Bolt. Creating the World of Bolt is a great one on the entire production of the film. A New Breed of Directors: A Filmmakers' Journey is about duo directors Chris Williams and Byron Howard. There’s also the new animated short Super Rhino starring everyone’s favorite hamster, two deleted scenes with director introductions and a video game entitled, Bolt's Be-Awesome Mission.
Directors Chris Williams and Byron Howard have proven themselves in their first animated feature. With the help of John Lasseter, the producer and one of the creative forces behind Pixar, Disney has yet another wonderful animated film with the movie Bolt. You may not be able to see it on the small screen in 3-D but you can see the beauty in the animation with its release in blu-ray.
