John Grogan (Owen Wilson) and his wife Jenny (Jennifer Aniston) relocate to sunny southern Florida after their wedding and end up working as reporters for two different local newspapers. As Jenny’s career is thriving, John’s reporting consists of writing obituaries and exciting stories like a fire at the local dump. John’s friend at the paper Sebastian Tunney (Eric Dane) warns him he better get a dog to slow down his wife’s biological clock. So for Jenny’s birthday John surprises her with a trip to adopt a dog. As John takes Jenny to the airport for a work trip, John drives Marley home for his first time. While listening to reggae the name Marley sticks. From the on-set the young pup proves to more incorrigible then he could have imagined. From his barking, to his eating everything in sight, Marley truly proves to be a handful. Even taking Marley to an experienced dog trainer named Ms. Kornblut (Kathleen Turner) proves to be a fruitless effort. John finally gets a break when Editor Arnie Klein (Alan Arkin) offers him a twice-weekly column that focuses on everyday life. Although John isn’t immediately happy with the promotion since he thinks of himself more as a reporter then a columnist he soon realizes he’s quite good at it. With the help of his pieces and his dog Marley, the Grogan family learns about life and themselves.
