Sandler Surprises in Disney's Bedtime Stories Print E-mail

One doesn’t usually think of Disney and Adam Sandler in the same sentence. Former Saturday Night Live cast member known more for his potty humor is not someone you would normally expect to star in a romantic family comedy. Still, in more recently years Sandler has proven he is ready to break out of his silly roles with more dramatic offerings like Punch-Drunk Love, Spanglish and 2007’s Reign Over Me. Disney’s Bedtime Stories continues on with the more mature path with this family fantasy comedy that is now available on DVD and blu-ray.

Marty Bronson (Jonathan Pryce) is the owner of The Sunny Vista Motel in Los Angeles and ran it with his two children - Wendy (Courteney Cox) and Skeeter (Adam Sandler). The motel was a magical place for a child and especially for a six year old boy who loves exploring the place and coming up with new ideas on how to improve it. Marty was a pretty good Dad and a pretty good host, unfortunately he was a lousy businessman. In the verge of going bankrupt, Marty sells off the motel to Mr. Nottingham (Richard Griffiths) with the verbal understanding that Skeeter one day can run the new and improved motel. Fast forward to twenty five years later and the little motel is now Sunny Vista Nottingham a giant among the chain of Nottingham Hotels. Skeeter is still around although not treated with the greatest of respect as the handy man. Mr. Nottingham has a plan to build a new more modern hotel and instead of keeping his promise, picks the kiss-ass Kendall (Guy Pearce), who just happens to be dating his daughter the sexy Hollywood social-lite Violet (Teresa Palmer). Later that evening Skeeter stops by to visit his sister Wendy and her two children Patrick (Jonathan Morgan Heit) and Bobbi (Laura Ann Kesling). Wendy asks Skeeter to watch her kids while she is away looking for a new job in Arizona. The first night of babysitting he tells a bedtime story set in medieval times based loosely on his own current situation at the hotel. However when Skeeter tries to end the story with a un-happy ending. The kids offer up an alternate ending with the Skeeter character Mister Fix-a-lot getting a shot at the manager role and the whole story ends with it raining gum balls – the end. The next day the bedtime story comes true when Skeeter gets a chance to compete against Kendall’s Hard Rock Theme idea for the new hotel. If that isn’t déjà vu enough on his way home it starts raining gum balls.

Can Skeeter create his own destiny with a little help from the kids and live happily ever after? Time will tell in this cute little fantasy tale. Along with Adam Sandler, Courteney Cox and Guy Pearce there are great performances by Skeeter’s love interest Keri Russell, his co-worker British comedian Russell Brand and a big-eyed guinea pig named Bugsy.

Now available on blu-ray, the film comes with a nice collection of bonus material. First up we have a bonus disc in standard def and a digital copy for your portable mp3 player so you can see the film no matter where you are. Of course the blu-ray copy of the film is in high def that has bonus features that include a blooper reel, a nice collection of eleven deleted scenes and two featurettes "Get to Know Bugsy the Big-Eyed Guinea Pig," and "A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Special Effects." It would have been nice to have a commentary track with Adam Sandler and some of the other actors or just one with Russell Brand alone would have been worth it right there.

Disney’s Bedtime Stories is a film for the Adam Sandler fans but also for the whole family. The movie has its entertaining moments and Bugsy with his big bug-eyes always makes me smile. Bedtime Stories is a fun harmless film that will make you laugh and feel warm all over.
