Her persona beamed across the stage, as she came out solo and solemnly took her place at her piano. She maybe one of Australia’s biggest stars, but in Chicago she was nothing but humble and reserved. There were no fancy lights, costume changes, or ridiculous theatrics. She just gave off that small town girl vibe playing in the big city.
Opening with her song, “Sugar Cane” off her latest album On A Clear Night, she graced the crowd with her soothing vocals and delicate piano chords. After a few songs, her band joined her on stage and the mood went from peaceful and melodious to an array of liveliness.
She performed many songs off On a Clear Night in addition to some songs that were featured on her previous album, The Sound of White. The crowd cheered as she performed her soon-to-be hit, “Secret,” but to a different beat, slowing it down and adding in some more aggressive guitar licks.
Quirky and elated, she spoke about Australia and got all excited when someone handed her a pair of glasses that changed colors and flashed vibrantly, explaining, “I can’t believe you brought these to my show!” in her adorable Australian accent, bearing a beaming grin. Though it was hard for her to perform in the eclectic glasses; her drummer, Terapai Richmond gladly accepted them, putting them on almost immediately. Playing alongside the antics, fellow members began playing a Chippendales style beat, causing Richmond to unbutton his shirt, getting all the ladies in the room worked up into a heated frenzy.
A melting pot of young and old, gay and straight, rich and blue collar all joined together on that cool Friday the thirteenth night. Graced by the beauty that soothed everyone’s soul, couples huddled together and embraced a moment as Higgins closed out her show with “Where I Stood.” Her latest hit that has been featured on popular shows including Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, and Lipstick Jungle.
Winning seven ARIA awards (similar to the American Grammy Award) it’s no doubt that Missy Higgins will be taking America by storm in the coming year. For more information and tour dates, check out her website at www.missyhiggins.com.
