Jim Gaffigan's King Baby is Bacon Delicious Print E-mail

With everything in life, taste is subjective to each individual from movies, music to food. Comedy as much as anything else is a matter of taste from the subject matter to even the way a comedian delivers it. One of the comedians that have slowly reared its ugly head in the comedy world is the usual humor of Jim Gaffigan. Gaffigan’s humor more often then not centers around laziness and food. Jim Gaffigan: King Baby on Comedy Central showcases his performance he did at Austin, Texas’ Paramount Theatre during his sold-out 2008 Beyond the Pale tour. The DVD of the show is now out on DVD and includes a slew of bonus material to check out after the show.

The pasty paunch of the physical being that is Jim Gaffigan does not on first look read star. Yet, Gaffigan has his own unique take on life and much of his standup focuses on his many hobbies of eating and trying his hardest to do as little as possible. With lines like “Should I sit down and do nothing or should I lie down and do nothing”? Gaffigan nails the head on the every man with out sounding like Larry the Cable Guy. “Have you ever had so much to do you decide to take a nap?” It’s all stuff we have thought about and his delivery is classic.

If he’s not talking about laziness on King Baby it’s all on food. Half of material on the disc alone focuses on his love for everything bacon. Who can blame him really? Everything is always a bit better when they involve bacon and if it’s wrapped in bacon – heaven! “You know bacon is bad when a healthier choice is a donut.” Inner voice- “How many bacon jokes is this guy going to do? I like bacon but come on!”

Part of the fun of Gaffigan is his use of the high pitched “inner voice” which he uses as commentary by a disappointed member in the audience. After almost every joke, he uses this device to get even a bigger laugh knocking himself and the previous joke. It works wonderfully and will have you clutching your side in painful laughter by the end of the show. “Pillow joke really is that what he’s doing? I didn’t know this was going to be so edgy. I didn’t come here to be shocked into laughter.”

EXTRAS

There are three episodes of the Pale Force cartoons that were featured on the Late Night With Conan O'Brien show. There is “sidekicks”, “Land of the Robots” and “Pale Christmas”. The series centers around two superheroes that look very much like Gaffigan and O’Brien. Both characters are voiced by Gaffigan and have their funny moments but is more weird then anything.

Our Massive Planet is a parody of wildlife shows staring the voices of Gaffigan and Jordan Rubin. There are four short episodes “Credentials”, “Primates 2”, “Zebras” and “Dogs” provided here to check out.

The “Never-Aired British Interview” is a parody of interview shows. It supposedly follows Gaffigan as he gets ready to head out on the road for his Sexy Tour. Where the feature entitled XM/Sirius Interview on UnMasked is a very real interview. You get to see a little bit more of the real person and not just the jokes.

There’s also Atlanta: Meet and Greet on Demand and little shorts promoting The Beyond the Pale Tour: Friday Night Stand Up. Which has some very funny bits but they really needed to remove the Comedy Central’s introductions. Completely annoying and makes it impossible to sit through them all.
