The first film brought the lovable SNL characters out of Saturday night right to Hollywood stardom. Everything changes for the local Friday late-night access hosts, when Wayne Campbell (Myers) and Garth Algar (Carvey) meet television executive Benjamin Kane (Rob Lowe). Benjamin tells the boys everything they want to hear and the two are quickly manipulated into signing a contract because Benjamin is the most honest person on the planet –NOT! With signing, the boys quickly find out what they have done as the show spirals out of their hands. If that isn’t enough, Benjamin is also in the process of stealing Wayne’s new girlfriend away from him the beautiful and hot singer Cassandra (Tia Carrere). Can Wayne and Garth find a way to get their show back, will Wayne get Cassandra away from Benjamin long enough to help her and her band get a meeting with record company executive Frankie Sharp (Frank DiLeo) and will Garth ever finally get enough nerve to talk to the waitress (Donna Dixon) and confess his love to his “Dream Woman”?
This is all part of the fun that is Wayne’s World but how will it all end? Well you have three possible options, you have "The Sad ending," The Scooby-Doo ending" or "The Mega-Happy ending?" Never fear you get to see them all to figure it all out for yourself, duh!
Along with the feature film we have a few bonus features as well. There is nothing new here that is exclusive for Blu-ray and that is unfortunate, since I suspect there is a ton of outtakes and a great blooper reel hidden some where in the archives waiting to be discovered. None the less, first up there is a commentary track by director Penelope Spheeris. Penelope is a smart woman and talks in great detail about her experience with the film and the actors including all the great cameos. One in particular is the fact that she was the original director of the song “Dream Weaver” a song that is showcased prominently in the film. Penelope is very well educated in the musical world, especially metal after documenting the genre in her film The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years and she goes into great detail about music in her commentary. Along with the theatrical trail in HD, the only other bonus material is the Wayne’s World Extreme Close-Up. This is a nice little documentary which was made at the time with a series of cast and crew interviews. This is actually a descent featurette that clocks in at almost twenty minutes and is very informative about making the film.
On the follow-up with Wayne’s Worlds 2, everyone’s favorite cable access hosts Wayne and Garth are back. A year has passed since the last film, Wayne has moved out of his parent’s basement and is now living in a loft with Garth, he's still dating Cassandra (Tia Carrere) and they have both started growing pubes. After they finish their weekly show, the boys head to Chicago for an Aerosmith concert. Later that night after the concert, Wayne has a life changing dream. In the dream Wayne is taken to meet Jim Morrison in the desert by a naked Indian. Morrison tells him it is his destiny to put on a big rock concert. So the next day Wayne and Garth begin work on what becomes known as Waynestock. The two quickly realize it may be harder to make Waynestock a reality after having no luck trying to sign bands and sell tickets. In the meantime, Cassandra’s new producer Bobby Cahn (Christopher Walken) is trying to seduce Cassandra and take her away from Wayne and Illinois all together. All the while Garth meets a sexy woman at a laundry mat (Kin Bassinger) whom may have an alternative motive for her affection.
After the success of the first film, the producers were quick to work on a follow-up that clearly shows a bigger budget that in turn made for a most excellent sequel. As with the previous film, WW2 includes a ton of cameos including Christopher Walken, Kim Basinger, Drew Barrymore, Charlton Heston, Jay Leno, Heather Locklear, Rip Taylor and of course Aerosmith. The film the second time around retained the fun of the first film and proved to be as successful a sequel in the same realm as The Godfather 2 – NOT…well yes in a comedy sort of place.
Along with the film we have the same bonus material options that were offered in the first film. There is a commentary track by Canadian TV director Stephen Surjik. The commentary track is very informative and we get a lot of background on everything from working with Aerosmith as well as the technical process of making a film and in particular a comedy. The Wayne’s World Extreme Close-Up is the only other bonus feature but is a nicely done informative feature with a ton of interviews and behind the scenes footage.
The Wayne’s World films helped to catapult Mike Myers out of Saturday Night Live and into major movie stardom. The films still hold up today as it did back in the early 90’s. The films have become cult classic with many of their catch phrases still used even in our modern vernacular. Wayne’s World is now on Blu-ray and if you haven’t seen them in a while what are you waiting for? If not then what's your problem are you, mental?
