Comedies are a funny delicate business, they can be ripped by the critics but still make audiences flock to the box office. Much geared to the same audience of the American Pie comedies, the river road trip of Without a Paddle came out in 2004 was panned by critics but did well at the box office. In January, the direct to video sequel, Without a Paddle: Nature’s Calling, hit the stores without the star power that helped drive the first film. Now the two films are both available for the first time on Blu-ray.

Without a Paddle finds high school friends Jerry (Matthew Lillard), Dan (Seth Green) and Tom (Dax Shepard) coming back together after their friend Billy dies in a para-sailing accident in Costa Rica. The three friends re-bond after the funeral and find out that their friend Billy had plans for all of them to go on a treasure hunt in search of D.B. Cooper’s lost treasure. With the map in hand, the three set out to complete the adventure that their fallen friend was never able to make. Along the way they are attacked by a crazed grizzly bear, a pair of crazy backwoods pot farmers and two sexy hippy girls in the woods. Will the three complete their adventure and find D.B. Cooper before the pot farmers find them?

Along with the film, there is a slew of bonus material for you to enjoy after the film. First up you have an audio commentary by director Steven Brill or a video commentary by the cast and the director of the film. Both are informative but it’s the video commentary that is the most unique and its fun to watch them all interact with each other. MTV’s Making the Movie was a great segment from the TV network and their edition of Without a Paddle is included in this disc. There are also 13 deleted scenes with optional director commentary. These additional scenes actually have some of the funniest bits and it’s unfortunate they were originally removed but it’s nice they are included here. There are 6 MTV interstitials and the theatrical trailer in HD.

Without a Paddle: Nature’s Calling finds new high school buddies again on a trip down the river. This time we have Ben (Oliver James) and Zach (Kristopher Turner) who are best friends from grade school through high school. It is in high school where Ben becomes smitten with a cute little girl names Heather (Madison Riley), but before he can make his move she is expelled. Twelve years later, Ben is now a successful lawyer but he is still thinking about the girl that got away. Zach on the other hand is now a nurse working at a nursing home. When one of his patient’s dying wish is to find her granddaughter, Zach realizes from a picture it is Ben’s dream girl. Heather has been missing for seven years after she went into the woods to help save the environment. Zach talks Ben into taking on the quest and getting that second chance with the girl of his dreams. However there is one catch, Heather's questionable British cousin Nigel (Rik Young) is tagging along for the ride. Will Ben be reunite with the love of his life and will Zach too find the girl of his dreams?

Without a Paddle: Nature’s Calling comes with a few bonus materials for you to check out after the film most of them in HD. Up the Creek: The Making of Without a Paddle: Nature’s Calling is just that and is a nice little featurette in HD. Furious Nuts is also in HD and is a parody of featurettes on the crazy squirrels depicted in the film. Treehouse Tales also in HD is a short three minute featurette on the treehouse set piece. There are also deleted scenes and a gag reel.

The Without a Paddle series will never win any awards but that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun mindless comedy. If you are looking for some silly entertainment consider picking up the Without a Paddle films now on Blu-ray.
