The Dan Band, who you may have seen in “Old School” and “Starsky and Hutch,” played to a sold out crowd at the House of Blues Saturday night. The band’s lead singer is well…Dan and he dresses up like an auto mechanic and his backup singers, Gene & John, look like chaperones at a ’60s high school prom. Dan Finnerty is a Broadway-trained performer, who once drunkenly performed “I am Woman” at a karaoke bar in Toronto one night and got such a great reaction to it he decided to create a band that would only cover “Girl Group” songs. He started performing with his group around the LA area and was the house band for Oxygen channel’s Pajama Party.
Their big break came with their appearance in "Old School." Dan is also married to actress Kathy Najimy who was most notablyone of the nun’s in “Sister Act” and the voice of Peggy Hill on the TV show, “King of the Hill.”
They kicked off the set with “Gloria” a tune that you may think as cheesy and hokey, (which is the point) but they also pull it off with flair that draws you into their world of horrible ’80s music. This sets the stage for an evening of womanly songs with some breaks in between to interact with the audience.
What I mean by “interact with the audience” is Dan takes a moment between parodies to insult some drunk people. The choreography, yes that’s right choreography, is spot on and rivals the likes of a N’Sync or even the Backstreet Boys. Hell, I think it’s even better than any crappy boy band but that’s just me. Their “fake encore”, that’s what the band refers to it as, was Chicago’s own Styx’s “Lady” which got a roaring reception.
Overall, The Dan Band is your better than average cover band, your college party band, your local bar band, or your wedding reception band. They can play any song that you throw at them and they shove it right down your throat with vulgarity and an electric stage presence. So go check them out when they come to your town. Bring some friends and of course drink a few beers it always helps.
