Every few decades a visionary steps in and brings the creative world of filmmaking to the next level. In 1977, it was George Lucas with Star Wars that not only created a franchise but pushed the envelope of special effects into the twenty first century. Jump forward to 1991, director James Cameron changes the playing field again with Terminator 2 and the CGI effects of the T-1000's shape shifting liquid metal. With the latest Terminator film in theaters, the second and arguably the best of the franchise has come to Blu-ray looking amazing in HD.

Set a decade after the original film, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) is now locked up at the Pescadero State Hospital for the Criminally Insane after attempting to blow up a computer factory. Sarah with the help of time traveler Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) destroyed the original Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger)in hopes to change the future. Now in Los Angeles in the year 1995, their ten year old son John Connor (Edward Furlong) is living with his latest foster parents. John is a struggling confused kid, it’s not easy to have a normal life when your mother is trying to prepare you to be the future leader of the resistance against the machines. With his mother locked up, John uses some of his training to hack into ATMs and steal money to play video games with his friends. Once again the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) arrives from the future this time in search of John. Another time traveler also arrives from the future (Robert Patrick), who takes on the look of a police officer. After getting a tip from John’s foster parents, the man dressed as a police officer arrives at the arcade in the mall. Thinking he is after him for the ATM incident, John flees through the back hallways. As he turns a corner he starts running right towards the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who is carrying what appears to be a big long box of long stem roses. From behind John, the police officer appears and pulls out a gun, the Terminator orders John to “get down” and reveals not roses but a shotgun out of the box. He proceeds to fire several shots into the police officer however it only seems to slow him down. The holes of the shot gun blasts suddenly seal up and it is apparent he is not human but a new stronger Terminator known as the T-1000.

James Cameron made a smart call when they made Arnold the hero in the follow up to the original Terminator. The years that had followed the original film, Arnold became the biggest action hero on the planet and with T2 – the universe. T2 really showcased the future of using computer graphic special effects (CGI) and the film is finally getting the royal treatment on Blu-ray. The film has been available for some time but with no bonus material that was offered in previous DVD releases. Although the one disc set looks very bare bones by the box don’t be

fooled. This little Blu-ray disc is stocked full of special features to keep you glued to your TV for hours. If you have a profile 2.0 player the disc will boot up to a map of your location with a message stating that "Skynet has detected a potential target located in this area." A bit silly but it’s still all Big Brother fun. Once you reach the full menus you have an option to watch three different versions of the film. Yes you read that right – three. If you read the description on the box it clearly states “multiple versions” and not just the two that they appear to offer in the menu. You have the theatrical 137-minute version, the 154-minute Special Edition version and a hidden Easter Egg version of the Extended Special Edition clocking in at a 156-minutes. In the Select Version menu, click on the asterisks and type in "82997" (the date of Judgment Day). When you do this you can watch the Extended Special Edition with an alternate ending and one additional scene with the T-10the T-1000 trying to find clues to John’s room. This is all done by the process of branching that they used effectively on the Close Encounters of the Third Kind Blu-ray release.

In the Sensory Control you have two audio commentaries. One is the 26-person production commentary and the other is with director James Cameron and his co-writer William Wisher. They both are great to get some insight in this breakthrough film. In Interactive Modes you have “Visual Implants a picture-in-picture option with interviews and different featurettes. There is also "Trivia Data Overlay," "Production Data Overlay,” "Source Code" comparing the screenplay to the final film, "Schematics" on the story boards and "Query Mode" a trivia quiz and "Processor Tests" a series of games playable throughout watching the film. Ancilary Data is a collection of theatrical trailers and teasers all in HD. There are also the two deleted scenes that appear in the Extended Special Edition. Both of these have an optional commentary track with the actors and the production team. The only additional content is the BD-Live that I always find too slow and tedious to sit around and wait to download. Regardless, there is plenty there if you are willing to spend the time.

It’s nice to se they have finally spent the time to create a nice Blu-ray package for T2. The film looks fantastic in Blu-ray and it’s great to see they have given you all three versions of the film here as well. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition) Blu-ray is perfect to add to your ever growing library.
