Green Day Underlines the Purpose of Art Print E-mail

American Idiot was just a warm-up for what was to come with Green Day’s latest album, 21st Century Breakdown. Divided into three acts, this album blatantly challenges and questions religious groups, the government, and the media, who currently serve as the ruling forces of American society.

"21st Century Breakdown"
(Reprise Records)
Released May 15, 2009

These critiques are painted into the story of Christian and Gloria, a young couple who are living in present-day America and “dealing with the problems that our last president left behind.” 21st Century Breakdown does not completely confine itself to the couple’s experiences—it does span into global concerns—but they do create a strong foundation for the sound, rhetorical stance, and lyrical quality that Green Day was aiming for. The best part about 21st Century Breakdown is that Green Day blends their trademarked sound with the rhythm of pianos, recorded sound, and a full string orchestra. Aside from adding interest to the album and Green Day’s overall sound, the combination of punk and symphony helps listeners understand their place in the story of Christian and Gloria, which is also a snapshot into the ever-changing landscape of American history.

Perhaps the only downside to 21st Century Breakdown is that it may not resonate with listeners whose politics clash with Green Day’s. People who are unable to come to terms with unapologetic critique or questioning may also find themselves left in the dust. Yet, those who are able to open their minds to cultural critique without falling prey to bitterness, judgment, or bias will get the most out of this album. 21st Century Breakdown will make a strong addition to your CD or mp3 collection, making it well worth the buy.

I am one of the "right wing extremests" the lefties warned are so dangerous to our society. I have also been a Green Day fan since Dookie. My political beliefs do not prevent me from appreciating this record at all, after all, I concur George W. Bush sucked hard and took down the same road as Bill Clinton and FDR for that matter.
I would like to sit and listen to Billie Joe voice approval for what Barrack has done not FOR our country, but TO our country. He is stealing away any hope for a sound future not only for my children, but my grandchildren. This record is going to more and more, as time goes by, be AIMED at the crazies in D.C. The Repubs and the Dems! Our only hope as Enemy is REVOLUTION against the 2 party system, taking our country back and going back to our founding fathers who believed that LESS government is better and we should vote every one of those bastards out, before they take every last one of our liberties away.
NO MORE SPENDING our money, NO MORE confiscating companies at their whim, and NO MORE TAXING those that work for those who don't.
Hmm...

Green Day Mistress,

In reference to "people who may not agree with their politics": I was talking about Wal Mart, potentially the Evangelical Right, and or those who are quick to pass judgment on this album without any second thought.

By the way: it is just a review and an opinion; it is not an attack on anyone, which you seemed to take it as. My bad if it doesn't agree with yours, but clearly you have some frustrations you need to work out elsewhere.
