Fatal Attraction became the second highest growing film in 1987 and received six Academy Awards including Best Picture. We all know the story of happily married New York attorney Daniel Gallagher (Michael Douglas) who thinks with the wrong head when he has a weekend affair with temptress Alex Forrest (Glenn Close). The fun fling turns into a dangerous game of obsession that is causing problems at Gallagher’s work and even worst threatening his home life with his wife and child.
This fun thriller of the most extreme case of what will happen if you choose to cheat, looks fantastic on Blu-ray and comes with some nice bonus features. The commentary track by director Adrian Lyne is very engaging and gives us a window inside his brain. Everything from working with the actors to the restaurant where the two first decide to have the affair (It was Lyne’s favorite eating spot in NY at the time) to the mistakes he made are all discussed in detail. Forever Fatal: Remembering Fatal Attraction is an almost thirty minute overview on the making of the film from script to final film. Social Attraction - The Cultural Phenomenon of Fatal Attraction is a short featurette on the reactions of the film from critics, viewers and the feminist persepective. Visual Attraction - Behind the Scenes Production Featurette is a nineteen plus short of interviews with the film’s make-up designer, cinematographer, production designer, and costume designer on creating the overall look of the film. Rehearsal Footage feature with a introduction by the director is three scenes with actors Michael Douglas with Glenn Close and one of just Anne Archer working out scenes that would eventually be part of the film. There’s something fascination watching raw footage of actors method of working out their careers. Finally we have the crème of the crop of the extras with the touted Alternate ending with director’s introduction. This is the original ending that the filmmaker later decided wasn’t enough to conclude this film and it is here in HD for you to decide for yourself.
Made five years later, Lyne once again enters familiar waters with a story about sexual attraction, temptation and the paths it will take us down with his 1993 film, Indecent Proposal. Childhood sweethearts David (Woody Harrelson) and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) are seemly a happily married couple who head to Vegas to gamble with hopes to make enough money for David's real estate project. After losing it all on roulette, a chance encounter with billionaire John Gage (Robert Redford) could change everything. Gage is instantly attracted to the beautiful Diana and makes an unusual offer - he will give David one million dollars to spend a night with his wife. David agrees but quickly realizes his mistake and his world quickly spirals out of control. Will he get his wife back or has he lost her forever?
Indecent Proposal became another box-office success for Adrian Lyne and has become part of popular culture and has been parodied on everything from The Simpsons to even television commercials. Unlike Fatal Attraction, the film only comes with one special feature that of a commentary track by director Adrian Lyne. This commentary track is very intermittent through the course of the film and there are large parts of the film where he does not comment at all. Which s too bad because there are some moments in the film that are obvious homage’s to Fatal Attraction but there isn’t any comments by the director. Sadly the only bonus feature is done in a half ass way and was available on the previous standard def edition.
Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal both stand the test of time and shows director Adrian Lyne in his prime dominating the box-office. They aren’t films that should be taken too serious but they are fun dramas that can make you think of what you would do in their shoes. Fans of these films will want to pick them up and see them now on for the first time on hi def.
