Russell Brand in New York City Arrives on Special Uncensored DVD Release Print E-mail

Many may know English comedian and actor Russell Brand from his memorable appearance as the narcissistic British rock star Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The hilarious comedy introduced America to the unusual comedian that almost stole the show from the stars and has now given him his own Comedy Central special available for the first time in an uncensored and extended edition on DVD.

Stand-up comedy can be hit and miss and it often helps if you are already familiar with them and their brand of comedy. Russell Brand’s persona is very much like his Aldous Snow character. Brand himself has described himself as "an S&M Willy Wonka" like character. He sure looks like that or any wannabe rock star of today. His own humor is both British and raunchy in his own charming sort of way. You can’t help but like Brand who finds that delicate balance of wit and crass and spins it all to make you smile. Brand talks about liking being famous and the disastrous experience he had as host of the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. He even talks about the behind the scenes issues he had with hosting and some of the bits that were omitted from the show. A series of death threats that have been sent to him will find you rolling around on the floor uncontrollably.

Brand’s sharp delivery of his material is well timed and will attack you from so many angles you are at his mercy. With using himself as the blunt of the joke, Brand can take it anywhere and get away with murder and the audience is on his side all the way. It is in his attitude playing the character that has manifested into himself that makes this Comedy Central special shine.

Along with the new Extended and Uncensored version of the show that originally aired on March 8, 2009, they have included a few bonus features as well. They include four outtakes scenes from the show with the main title Loose Cannon Drunk Girl. Which is a series of disruptions from the audience during the recording of the show, with often hilarious and biting off the cuff responses by Brand. An Englishmen in NY is a short that documents some of the fun and silliness Brand had in NY when he came out to film the show including the cover art to meeting fans on the street. The Notorious 2008 MTV VMA Monologue feature shows how the MTV audience truly did not get his style of humor. By the lack of applause, he does appear to have bombed which is too bad because the material is very funny.

Russell Brand may be a huge name in Britain but he is just now starting to get the fame he so deserves here in the United States. Much like Sasha Baron Cohen and his crazy cast of characters like Borat and Bruno, Russell Brand has created a hilarious persona that is him and all eyes are on him laughing till it hurts.

:grin I enjoyed this uncut version especially the extras so much better than the Comedy Central tame version of this show. Russell Brand is taking America by storm! He's charming, witty, intelligent, saucy plus his talents span radio, TV, hosting, movies, singing, author and lothario! I can't get enough of the bohemian Dickensian gent--the lanky licorice stick goth Willy Wonka pirate fella! I hope he is around for many years to come.
Got your back!!

I hear they are doing a spin-off movie of his character with him as the lead from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Hopefully will be as fun and funny as the original film!
