Gregg Gillis of Girl Talk Speaks Print E-mail
Written by DAN HYMAN
Wednesday, 03 June 2009
Rising above a sea of nearly 10,000 dreadlocked, nag champa odored hippies, Gregg Gillis, the biomedical engineering graduate turned laptop remixing DJ, more commonly known by his stage name Girl Talk, jumps on his mixing tables, ripping off his final layer of clothing, and dives into the rising gonja haze emanating from the front row of the inebriated crowd. A few hours earlier Gillis is feverishly saran-wrapping his laptop backstage in his trailer, while discussing his return to Illinois’ answer to Bonarroo- The Summercamp Music Festival in Chillicothe, Illinois.

Girl Talk
Gregg Gillis: DJ

Lumino’s own Dan Hyman, who has lately been moonlighting as musical intern at TimeOut, caught up with the mile-a - minute chatting Gillis before he performed and quickly jetted back to Seattle for another gig.

Feed The Animals was critically praised for its innovative approach to remixing. Was this some spur of the moment idea you thought of while smokin’ a pipe in your Case Western dorm room or was it devised bored during one of your biomedical engineering lectures?

(While laughing) You know, if you want to start a heavy metal band, there’s famous people you can look up to. Or if you’re into rap or hip-hop you’ve got your De La Souls and your 50 Cents. I used to listen to guys that were smaller than (I am now). It’s gotten bigger than any of the people I looked up to. It’s kinda strange. It just kinda happened.

Do you have a minute to breath and be like ‘Damn, I’m performing at a festival for thousands of people?’

I used to perform for 30 or less people at art galleries or opening up for other bands so it’s still completely surreal. I never thought I’d be here a few years ago. It’s great though. I get to check out bands I wouldn’t normally see.

Such as?

I’m definitely gonna check out Umphrey’s McGee. And you gotta see Method (Man) and Red (Man). I’m always excited to see new bands.

You seem to embrace the idea of having the audience surround you onstage during your shows. Was that your idea and more importantly have you caught any flack from venues for it?

It wasn’t my idea. Back at the beginning people weren’t up onstage. It just kinda caught on where people get up (onstage) every show. There are so many rules for concerts. I mean, who came up with these rules? It’s so formulaic. Sometimes you just gotta step outside that box.

Speaking of stepping outside the box, what’s with all the layers of clothing you wear and then rip off during your performances? You doing a strip tease up there or something?

I had to do something to stand out. You wanna do something to cause a reaction. So I just started taking my shirt off at shows. These days I rarely have a show with my shirt on.

Scandalous. I just have to ask. Is there a reason you’ve been wrapping your laptop in saran-wrap this whole time or do you just have a wicked case of ADD?

Hahah. It’s a hot wet war up there. You gotta be ready for shit to happen onstage and beer to be spilled on your computer.

Girl Talk is sick! I learned a lot about him from this, but the writer did ask phenomenal questions. Good job Dan Hyman whoever you are.
