Every once in a while a movie comes along and captures perfectly the darkness. Much in the way that David Lynch did with Blue Velvet back in 1986, The Machinist brings you into a nightmarish world. Starring Christian Bale, the film takes you on a journey of a man that is going through something so intense that it is literally eating away at him. This Kafkian psychological thriller is now available for the first time in hi def on Blu-ray.

Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) works the night shift at a machine shop. However something has happened to him, he’s had chronic insomnia for the last year and it is affecting him mentally and physically to the point he is wasting away. When he is not at work he spends his time with a prostitute named Stevie (Jennifer Jason Leigh), whom genuinely seems to enjoy his company. When he is not there he is at a greasy spoon at the airport where he engages in conversation with the pretty Maria (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón), a waitress and mother of a little boy. At work his co-workers have become stand-offish by his skeletal appearance. It all comes to a head after an accident at the shop that Trevor is involved with costs co-worker Miller (Michael Ironside) his left arm. From there begins the sliding downward spiral that may eventually show him the peace and salvation he needs.

The Machinist is a powerful morality tale about where someone goes within one’s self when they can not deal. Much in the same vein as Christopher Nolan’s film Memento, we are on a ride with our lead character as he tries to decipher the truth within the madness. Through the course of the film we are given clues to his past that eventually leads to the truth.

Extras

Audio Commentary by director Brad Anderson is well delivered, informative and perfect to listen to the second time around. There are two new features made exclusively for the Blu-ray. Manifesting The Machinist is a twenty plus featurette in HD with screenwriter Scott Kosar and director Brad Anderson. The two talking great lengths about everything from the story to getting it made in Spain. The Machinist: Hiding in Plain Sight is also here in HD and reveals to the viewer all of the symbolism and clues that are in the film. The Machinist: Breaking the Rules is similar in content to the Manifesting The Machinist and discusses the making of the film and of Christian Bale’s dedication to the character. There are also eight deleted and alternate takes and a theatrical trailer.
