Killing is Even More Delicious in Season Two Print E-mail

Murder has been around since the beginning of time like the two brothers in the Bible with the story of Cain and Abel. Evil has always existed as the Ying and Yang to counter balance the good. So it’s not easy to make a serial killer a likeable hero, yet Showtime has successfully done that with their hit Dexter. The dark drama based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay about a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department by day and serial killer by night, is a unusual but delightful hit. Dexter has recently been given the green light for its fourth and fifth season and the second season is now out on Blu-ray.

The show centers around Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) who works with his sister at the Miami Metro Police Department as an expert in analyzing blood splatter. Dexter appears on the surface to be a relatively normal person yet he has a secret – he’s a serial killer. It’s a craving that without the strict moral code his adopted father taught him would have destroyed him or gotten him caught years ago. As a young boy Dexter was found at a crime scene and adopted by Miami police officer Harry Morgan (James Remar), whom instantly saw the evil and the turmoil within Dexter. The “Code of Harry,” as Dexter refers to it, taught Dexter how to control the urges and to function and appear on the surface normal in every day society. The bottom line – his victims must be killers themselves who have killed multiple times with no regret or remorse.

In Season One, the series focused on another serial killer referred to by the press as the “Ice Truck Killer”, Dexter was instantly impressed with his methods and while the “Ice Truck Killer” eluded police he was communicating with Dexter leaving clues at the crime scenes and in his refrigerator. Through the course of the season Dexter learns the truth of his past including his mother and some things he never wanted to know about Harry. All the while, still doing his own killings, having a girlfriend, saving his sister from the “Ice Truck Killer” and staying one step ahead of Sgt. James Doakes (Erik King) (who has a hunch about Dexter but can’t put his finger on what it is).

The first season was a perfect introduction to what was to come. In Season Two, Dexter’s world is turned upside down when his collection of victims are discovered by treasure hunters. As piece by piece are removed from their watery graves, The FBI is eventually brought in to help find the new Miami serial killer called the "Bay Harbor Butcher". Dexter’s relationship with his girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) becomes rocky when she fears Dexter was involved in setting up her horrible ex-husband to go back to jail. Dexter admits to his involvement but in the process Rita comes to the conclusion that Dexter must also have a heroin addict. Seeing it as a way out, Dexter rolls with it and finds himself at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Here he meets what will become an additional love interest that starts out as a sponsor with the alluring and femme fatale Lila (a former meth addict and former arsonist). As Dexter continues to deal with the demons of his past, the FBI is getting closer and Sgt. Doakes is getting even closer.

Can Dexter find peace in his past and his present? Will Dexter finally get caught and will Lila be his downfall or his accomplice? These are just a few of the questions that get answered by the end of Season Two. This season proved that the first one wasn’t a fluke and Showtime has a unique hit on their hands. Dexter might not be for everyone, but if you are a fan of American Psycho, crime dramas and smart witty well written storylines, then Dexter is for you.

Extras

Once again as with Season One on Blu-ray, everything except for a silly game entitled Tools of the Trade (that allows you to arrange Dexter’s tools into his bag) on disc 3, all the bonus material is only available on BD Live. Why Showtime is going to so little effort to add quality bonus material for this wonderful series is shocking. You can download the first two episodes of the Showtime series The United States of Tara, there are video podcasts from each of the main cast, a few short video clip promos of the Dark Defender comic series and a “Blood Fountains” featurette. All of this isn’t really worth the time it takes to get it all and stream it online. Maybe with Season Three coming in August they will finally get it right.
