Friday The 13th Continues to Slice Into Blu-ray Print E-mail

The golden age of the slasher film truly arrived in the 80’s despite the fact that John Carpenter’s Halloween came out a few years earlier in 1978. Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine, A Nightmare on Elm Street all had a lot of fun scaring the hell out of us in that decade and made us think twice before going down a dark road alone. Of course one of the all time classic’s is the Friday the 13th franchise and the follow up to the original classic is now out on Blu-ray.

Friday the 13th Part 2 introduces us to the killer Jason Voorhees. Last we saw him, he was a pasty mutated little boy, who watched his mother die, leaping out of the lake attacking Alice Hardy (Adrienne King). Alice was the lone survivor from the previous film and she is back briefly for one more confrontation with Jason. Jump five years later and it is now 1984 and yet another group of young adults, this time counselors in training, are heading out near the grounds of Crystal Lake. The past years have been quiet and the locals want to keep it that way. Even Crazy Ralph is back to once again to warn the new group to get out before it’s too late.

Friday the 13th 2 found a new evil and a franchise with Jason as unstoppable killer. Who knew a last minute scare in the first film would create an icon that would live one for film after film. Of course Jason is still one movie away before the filmmakers finalize the character. In this film he is only wearing a burlap bag over his head and his body type is more like a teenager then the big burly man he is in later films. Still, Friday the 13th 2 doesn’t disappoint in the slasher genre. From gratuitous nudity to plenty of adults to kill it has it all.

Friday the 13th Part 2 continues the campy fun where the first one left off. The disc is full of great bonus material that has been lacking in previous home editions. However, if you are going to have interviews that talk about an alternate ending that was actually filmed, then you need to include that in the bonus material. Otherwise, it's just a bad tease that makes you unsatisfied. Perhaps the next "Special Edition" will finally bring the mythical alternate ending and finally explain the disappearance of one of the main characters. Until then you will have to pick up Peter M. Bracke's book and look at the production stills.

Extras

The good new is almost all of the bonus special features are in HD the bad news there is no commentary track and none of the original cast or crew participates in the bonus material. Inside Crystal Lake Memories is a fifteen plus minute interview with author Peter M. Bracke. Bracke wrote and researched a coffee table book about the entire series. Bracke is probably the most knowledgably person in regards to the franchise on the whole planet. However, all of his info is second hand and was never there as it happened. Friday's Legacy: Horror Conventions is a fun little featurette with many of the alumni attending a convention and their interaction with the fans. Lost Tales From Camp Blood – Part 2 is another new little random short with people getting attacked in the Crystal Lake area. They are some what amusing to watch but not sure what the point of these short other than filler for this section. Jason Forever appears to be a carry over from a previous edition since it is the only bonus feature not offered in HD. Regardless, it is also from the convention and showcases the many actors that have played Jason in the films. The theatrical trailer in HD rounds out the bonus material.
