What do you do with the third installment of a slasher franchise? Well if you are the producers of the Friday of the 13th films, you jump on the band wagon of a 3-D revival back in the 80’s. It makes sense, the technology is 3-D and this is film number 3 in the series. This is the film that finally introduces the infamous hockey mask that would be Jason’s signature look. Now on Blu-ray, the film is presented the way it was meant to be seen in silly but effectively fun in 3-D.

Taking place where the previous film left off, we see television news footage of the sole survivor Ginny (Amy Steele) being wheeled into the ambulance. She has survived the attacks from Jason; however that means he is still out there. Looking for safety and a disguise, Jason finds himself at a nearby store where he steals clothes but not before he kills the owners as well. Meanwhile a group of friends head out to the Higgins Haven near the infamous Crystal Lake. One of them in the group is a pretty girl named Chris Higgins (Dana Kimmell). Two years ago Chris was attacked here by a creepy disfigured stranger and it is her first visit since the incident. Everything seems to be going well until Shelly (Larry Zerner) and Vera (Catherine Parks) in the group have a run in with a local gang when they go to pick up supplies in town. The two escapes the gang but they are followed them back to the property. The gang isn’t the only uninvited guests, Jason too has arrived and is ready to add more bodies to his vengeance. Will Chris survive another confrontation with the deformed stranger that is obviously Jason? How will Jason finally come to find his favorite head gear? That’s part of the fun that is in the third installment of the franchise

Like all of the Friday the 13th films, Part 3 shares a very similar plot line, however, the film works because of the fun the filmmakers had with the 3-D effects. Yes they are cheesy like a yo-yo coming at you or a hand punching through a car window but that’s part of the fun. The Friday the 13th films are nothing more then mindless entertainment and that’s why we love them.

Extras

The film is offered in both a 2-D and a 3-D version. Maybe because it was shot with the idea that it was to be viewed in 3-D, but the 2-D transfer looks muddy and off. Either way if your eyes start to hurt wearing one of the two 3-D glasses (that are included) you do have the option. All of the following featurettes are offered in HD. Fresh Cuts: 3D Terror has interviews with Crystal Lake Memories coffee table book author Peter Bracke who is a wealth of information on the film. Once again we are told about an alternate ending that was shot but not included in the bonus material – very frustrating. 3-D supervisor Martin Jay Sadoff also goes into great lengths of the 3-D process. Legacy of the Mask talks about everything from making the special mask, to why they used it in the first place, to it accidentally becoming the signature of Jason. Slasher Films: Going For the Jugular analyzes the genre and the overall appeal to movie goers. Lost Tales From Camp Blood -- Part III is yet another little short film on another couple meeting their fate but it doesn’t appear to be from Jason. These have been included in all of the Blu-ray releases and don’t seem to make a lot of sense. There isn’t any information if they have been specially made for the Blu-rays or perhaps leftover from the TV series.
