The music world was put into a state of shock yesterday as news spread of Michael Jackson’s unfortunate demise. Reports state that the pop icon was rushed to the hospital early Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles after undergoing cardiac arrest. Just hours later news came that he had gone into a deep coma and then suddenly died.

Michael Jackson

August 29, 1958- June 25, 2009

Jackson was one of those unique artists that had the ability to touch millions with a single song. To this day the song “Thriller” still tops charts worldwide. Growing up as a child of 80s Jackson could be seen everywhere. I don’t know a single person my age that has not at least attempted Jackson’s famous moonwalk.

Jackson was born August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana to a working class family. His father, Joseph Jackson encouraged his sons’ musical talent and quickly turned the family into a music group during the early 1960s. Known collectively as the “Jackson 5” Michael became the lead singer of the collective. Jackson showed a lot of potential at a young age and very quickly outshone the rest of his family. Before reaching the age of 20 Jackson already had such hits as “ABC,” “The Love You Save” and “I’ll be there” under his belt. The band even had their own cartoon during the late 60s.

By the mid-1970s the Jackson’s wanted more control over their music and broke ties with Motown .By 1979 Jackson had gone solo and his album Off the Wall took the world by storm. It wasn’t until the 80s that Jackson would become the undeniable King of Pop. His second album Thriller (1982) would change the face of music forever.

The album created seven top 10 hits and continues to be a source of influence for musicians everywhere. It was an all-star effort backed by some of the biggest names of the era. Director John Landis shot the music video that included cutting –edge special effects and an extended dance sequence. Thriller held the number one spot for an unheard of 37 weeks and earned eight Grammys.

While still riding the wave of super stardom Jackson suffered a massive injury in 1984 that burned his face and scalp badly. It is after this period that Jackson is believed to have started his experiments with plastic surgery, something that would haunt him for the rest of his career.

In was during the 90s that Jackson’s career started to nosedive. Living in seclusion at his Neverland Ranch, Jackson became a more mysterious and disputed figure. Talk of pedophilia and child molestation became common. A few years ago he decided moved overseas and even took up a home in the Middle East.

Just months before his death Jackson had been planning a big comeback show in London. Although Jackson wasn’t always seen as a role model in his later years his imprint on history is undeniable. This truly is the end of an era.
