Steve Martin is Back on the Case Now on Blu-ray Print E-mail

Hollywood these days seems to be running out of ideas and are making remake after remake. Steve Martin had some big shoes to fill back in 2006 when he took on Peter Seller’s most signature character. The new retooled Pink Panther was mostly panned by critics but did quite well at the American box offices. In fact it is the highest grossing Pink Panther film to date. Earlier this year Steve Martin once again donned the mustache and the garbled French accent for another go around as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther 2, which is now available on Blu-ray.

It appears the master thief the Tornado is up to his old tricks again. This time he is stealing famous artifacts all over the world including the Magna Carta in London, the Turin Shroud in Turin, and the Imperial Sword in Kyoto. In order to stop the cunning thief, France has put together a “Dream Team” to stop him and recover the precious pieces. The team consist of Chief Inspector Randall Pepperidge (Alfred Molina) of Great Britain, Inspector Vicenzo Brancaleone (Andy García) of Italy, Kenji Mazuto (Yuki Matsuzaki) from Japan and criminologist Sonia Solandres (Aishwarya Rai) from India. Oh and of course Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Clouseau’s worst fears are realized when he is on his way to board a flight to Japan to join the team, news leaks out that the Pink Panther Diamond has been the latest item to be stolen by the Tornado.

Can the Dream Team join forces to find the Tornado before more of the world’s priceless items are taken forever? Will the Dream Team finally snap and kill Clouseau or will he in the end find a way to prove worthy of being part of the team? These and many more questions are part of the fun in this all-star cast. Along for the ride is Monty Python’s John Cleese taking over the role of Chief Inspector Dreyfus, Lily Tomlin, Jean Reno, Jeremy Irons and Emily Mortimer.

With The Pink Panther 2, Steve Martin seems to be getting more comfortable with the character. Not since The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains has Steve Martin been so silly. The scene with the wine bottles is a new comedy classic. It’s bold and maybe even stupid to try to tackle a character that is impossible to separate from Peter Sellers. Yet the filmmakers and Steve Martin do their best and there is some true comedic laugh out moments.

Extras

The special features are a plenty. First up we have a digital copy of the film for you so you can take it on your iPod wherever you are going. A third disc contains 27 classic Pink Panther cartoons for you to watch that adds up to almost three hours. Sort of a weird choice at first glance but the Steve Martin version of the Pink Panther films are more geared for the family then the original films. There is unfortunately no commentary track or deleted scenes but there is a gag reel that has some funny moments. There are also three featurettes as well. Drama is Easy… Comedy is Dangerous focuses on how they worked on making the second film more tailor made for Steve Martin and the humor in general. A Dream Team Like No Other looks at all the great actors playing the Dream Team and has some nice behind the scenes footage. Master Thief – Global Crime Showdown is an interactive trivia game.
