Still debating what to do this 4th of July weekend? Tired of the same old lame park district fireworks? Fed-up with the hoards of tourists at the Taste of Chicago? Maybe you should consider packing up your tent and cooler and head up to Michigan for the 2nd Annual Rothbury Music Festival.

Only three hours away from Chicago, escape the hustle and bustle of the frantic holiday weekend for sun, sand, and over 70 different musical performances. This years lineup will feature performances from Bob Dylan and His Band, The Grateful Dead, String Cheese Incident (their only show), Willie Nelson & Family, Ani DiFranco, The Black Crowes, Chicago’s own Umphrey’s McGee, and many, many more.
Although Rothbury is only in its second year it is far past the maturity level of most newbie fests on the scene. Not only does it pride itself on being a sustainable camping festival, but, it includes amenities of the Double JJ Ranch. An indoor water park, canoeing and swimming at Big Wild Cat Lake, various cabins and pubs are all available at the blink of an eye. As for culture and art, attend the daily morning yoga sessions, take a look at the multiple art displays spread throughout the campgrounds and costume stilt walkers go by, lay in one of the many colorful hammocks located in Sherwood Forest, and party into the early morning with all the late night performances.
Head over to the “Think Tank” during the day to take part in various discussions from leading scientists, scholars, artists, and many more. Take part in the hand-on seminars including, “What is a Green Job and How Can YOU Get One?” and ,“The Path to Sustainable Cities,” to name a few. Be transported into a psychological wonderland as you take a stroll through the Sherwood Forest at night. With illuminated trees, eccentric bungalows, and the groups of friends decorated in glow sticks.
For those of you who are not into the whole “camping” scene—no worries. Rothbury’s “Good Life” packages are available. Amenities include air-conditioned bathrooms and showers, daily ice deliveries, and VIP viewing. Packages are customizable and made to fit every budget, including the “Lucky Lake” package which provides lake side camping access.
So gather up the troops, stock the cooler with beer, and bring plenty of good vibes as you soak into Rothbury 2009. For more information, including ticket sales and directions, visit - www.rothburyfestival.com
