“It was a very spontaneous album,” exclaimed Deal “it all came together kind of suddenly. Like we didn’t intend for it to come out on Record Store Day but when we realized it was going to happen we just went with it.”
Deal sounds overwhelmed on the phone and it is easy to see why. The band is set to
play a concert almost every night in the month of August, that kind of schedule would wear anyone out.
Living on the fly is a natural hazard of the rock star lifestyle but it is clear from talking to Kelly that most of the album was created out of happenstance. “The last song [on the album] ‘Pinnacle Hollow’ I did on my basement on a four-track-tape, hiss and all” exclaims guitarist and Breeders founder Kim Deal.
The whole album has a raw, unedited quality to it that seems to reject any attempt at commercialization. The title track “Fate to Fatal” is all over the map and yet bursts with the kind of genuine emotion only a great rock song can bring.
The appearance of Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan on the track “The Last Time” changes the mood ever so slightly. Lanegan sounds world weary and lost on the track and seems to be channeling Lou Reed or Tom Waits in their prime. Although the song is beautifully done one can’t help but feel that it is meant for a totally different album. It is as if everyone in the band had a different idea for what the album should sound like and they decided to try them all.
This is really no surprise when you consider the source. The Breeders are not so much a well oiled machine as a group of strong individuals working together and having fun. For instance, on the topic of music brought along on the road Kelly admits that everyone has brought along their own devices. Kim is passed out and Kelly is at the wheel talking to me and driving. It is clear that although they may tour together they all travel different paths.
Those who wish to cross paths with the band can do so next Thursday August 13 when they take the stage at the Metro. Small and intimate the Metro should be the perfect venue to soak up their eclectic sound.
