I have been waiting a long time for a band to redeem rock n’ roll. The Delta Spirit is just the band to do it. For the past few years too many rock bands sound like clones of each other replaying the same music over and over. The Delta Spirit’s set at Lollapalooza this Saturday proved that there is still hope.

As they took the stage at 12:30 p.m. it was still overcast and dreary. But two or three songs into their set not only was everyone dancing but the sun had come out in full force. Some bands have it, some bands don’t. It’s safe to say Delta Spirit has it.
Their music is unpretentious and full of passion. Every song had a sense of spontaneity to it that seemed to grab a hold of the audience. Although they move as an ensemble much of the carefree spirit can be attributed to lead singer Matthew Vasquez.
Vasquez was obviously having fun during the show and wasn’t afraid to embrace the moment. He loves what he does and it shows. “These guys on stage with me are my best friends,” he said to the audience “I have the greatest job in the world and I’m glad I could be here to share it with you.”
Multiple times throughout the set it felt like Vasquez was channeling early Dylan, not many musicians can pull that off well. This is especially true with songs like “People, Turn Around” which was beautifully done about halfway through the show.
Delta Spirit has what it takes to bring rock n’ roll back from the brink. The only downside of the show was the rather annoying Lollapalooza camera that kept getting in the way of performance. It is one thing to capture the moment on screen it is another to obscure the view of the people actually there. Next time they should find a way to film their footage more discreetly.
I highly recommend making the effort to go see the Delta Spirit in a intimate venue. They are truly a force to be reckoned with and I have no doubt that they will be on the scene for a long, long time.
