Pug Brings The Country to Chicago Print E-mail
Written by JORDAN BRANDES

Country music doesn’t get nearly the respect it deserves at big events like a Lollapalooza. For the most part a diverse spread of music is represented but country, real country, is usually left entirely out of the mix. On Saturday Joe Pug some how managed to sneak some in between the emo and the alternative rock. The result was refreshing but a little slower than I had hoped or expected.

Pug hails from North Carolina originally but is now living and working in Chicago. His music manages to mix both his country roots with his new metropolitan background.

Pug is still relatively fresh on the scene and really has not hit the public’s radar. Many in attendance at his performance were meeting him for the first time. This is exactly the sort of publicity Pug needs right now if he is going to make it in Chicago or in the music business in general.

Hitting the BMI stage on a sunny Saturday afternoon shortly after 3 PM, Joe had a lot cut out for him. Especially with buzz bands like Chairlift getting ready to rock out nearby on the Citi stage and Band of Horse sneaking in a early set at the Kidzapalooza stage. Unfortunately, Pug really needs to add some spice to his live act. If you closed your eyes Pug ‘s music sounds remarkably like that of the Counting Crows. That is not a bad comparison by any means; Pug just needs to find a more original path to take his music especially in 2009.

In time Pug will hopefully grow into his music, I have no doubt that originality will come his way. He really proved his worth with songs like “Nobody’s Man” that is filled with some truly powerful lyrics. Keep an eye on Pug, something tells me is going to be on the forefront of a new country scene that may very well explode in of all places, Chicago.
