With times being tough these days why go out to the movies when you have a great audio and video system in your own home? It’s cheaper to stay in where you are safe, more comfortable and don’t have to worry about the guy talking on his cell phone in front of you. If that isn’t enough reason, consider the fact that some of the best writing is not coming out of movies but instead from television. The days of waiting until next week to find what happened on your favorite show is gone with the video tape.
Now you can watch a TV show like a long mini-series by renting or buying the whole season on DVD and have a marathon screening of the show. The TNT series Leverage is a smart well-written show about a team of thieves headed by a former insurance investigator who help the helpless – think the A-Team with more brains and less brawn. If the show wasn’t on your radar when it originally aired, the first season is now available on DVD for you to catch up for season two.

Nate Ford (Timothy Hutton) is a man that has lost everything and with it has turned to the bottle. He wasn’t always like this. He was once top in his field as an Insurance Investigator who was feared by crooks and respected by his employers. One day the people he works for are the very people that allow his 8-year old son to die when they won’t agree to an experimental treatment. In the pilot episode we still Ford drinking his life away when he is propositioned by a stranger. A man named Victor Dubenich hires Ford for his experience of scams to lead a team of talented criminals to steal aeronautical plans that allegedly have been stolen. However after completing the job successfully they soon realize they have been double-crossed and aren’t even paid for the original job. They decide to retaliated and play a con on Victor and the team not only exposes Victor’s corruption to the FBI but it makes the team independently wealth. Each member decides not to retire after the job but instead agree to continue working together with no stipulation by Ford, he picks the jobs. Now the former criminals provide “leverage” to clients by doing what they do best. Using what was once for illegal means to do good for people who need them. Think of them as modern day Robin Hoods scamming the rich to help the poor.
Season one follows the team as they slowly get to know each other and learn to trust one another as employees of Leverage Consulting & Associates. In turn they expose scam after scam helping everyone from an Iraq vet, bank robbers and a man who went to jail to take a fall for a Mafia boss. The season slowly comes to the conclusion with Ford and the team taking on the CEO of the insurance company that robed Ford of his son.
