In the last decade, we have seen some real incredible talents coming out of television that have created some of the most original and unique shows of our time. What was once considered to be a step down, television today is producing some of the best writing and original stories as anything coming out of motion pictures. These creative visionaries are delivering the type of show that is both critically acclaimed and are seeing them rise to the realm of cult fan classics. J.J. Abrams is one of these visionaries who had his hand in Alias and Lost. Another is Joss Whedon is the creative genius has behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and now with the unique show entitled Dollhouse. Staring the very talented and former Buffy alumnus Eliza Dushku, Dollhouse which has recently been renewed for a second season, the first season is now available on DVD and Blu-ray complete with a ton of bonus materials.

What if you had a lot of money and wanted to hire someone to do everything you ever wanted or even be that someone you lost? Well that’s what the Dollhouse can do for you. An “Active” or a “Doll” is hired out to do anything that can range from a sexual fantasy to even possibly a crime. Think a modern day brothel meets Mission Impossible. However all is not what it seems and to call this a ring of prostitution would over simplify it all. The Dollhouse located somewhere underground in Los Angeles run by a research group called the Rossum Corporation has many levels to their objective with the Dollhouse.

Dollhouse focuses on an “active” known as Echo (Eliza Dushku), who as with all of the “actives”, voluntarily agree to a five year contract to be indentured servants. Through the course of the season as Echo is assigned various tasks, we slowly get a look into the person she once was and even possibly who she will be in the future. Along the way we get to know the people running Dollhouse, some of the other “actives” and even some of the people trying to expose it as well.

Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse is a show you really need to pay close attention from the very first episode. That doesn’t mean you’ll still understand it by the conclusion of the season though. Much like the show Lost, Dollhouse will keep you coming back for more clues and answers as it continues to throw out more curveballs. Dollhouse hidden in its message is a warning about technology and the dangers of how it can be used and abused. If there are any questions, all is exposed in the final unaired thirteenth episode.

Extras

More then any recent television show, probably the best way to experience Dollhouse is to pick it up on Blu-ray or standard DVD. Not only do we have all twelve episodes here to watch and analyze, but we have the original unaired pilot and even a thirteen episode that only aired in the United Kingdom. So you have fourteen episodes in all with three commentary tracks. The thirteen episode is very unique in that it features a completely new cast in a possible apocalyptic future that stems from the results of the Dollhouse technology. Even the crew is different using many of them from the TV show 24 (which shows in the filming style). The other bonus features included are deleted scenes and a slew of featurettes including Making Dollhouse, Coming Back Home, Finding Echo, Designing the Perfect Dollhouse and A Private Engagement.
