Cross Plays it Safe at Lolla Print E-mail

It is nearly noon on Sunday, the third day of the fest, and the heat is blaring down bad. Although Lollapalooza is a three-day festival most of the people going to the event are looking forward to today’s lineup. It is usually on days like today that lots of good bands get lost in the mix. That is why I am looking to experiment while I have some time.

Every festival I try to go to at least one band I know nothing about. This time around it is Alberta Cross. At first glance they look like your standard southern rock band but once they start to play the genres become a bit fuzzy.

Their music is sort of a mix between Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Originally hailing from London their roots show their approach to the southern rock genre. Throughout their set the band’s instrumentals were top notch. Bass player Terry Wolfers stole the show on more then one occasion.

Their vocals, on the other hand, need some work. To be fair that might, in part, be due to the sound system at the festival. Lollapalooza has a tendancy to set their bass pretty high and it can muffle a truly solid performance. Still, I found it genuinely hard to hear most of what was sung during the show.

The crowd seemed to have the same idea. The look on many faces was one of enjoyment but not exuberance. Right now Alberta Cross seems to be playing in neutral territory. Their music neither offends nor changes the scene. If they want to make a name for themselves they are going to have to kick it up a few notches and really prove their worth.
