Lollapalooza Lens: Bat For Lashes

A little mystery is always good. At a festival such as Lollapalooza, where artists can be separated into genres such as rock, folk, electronic or experimental, having something mildly exotic and ambiguous is a plus. Bat For Lashes, a.k.a Natasha Khan, supplied a needed dose of eclecticism at the vitaminwater stage at Lollapalooza.

Born in Brighton, England and having spent parts of her childhood in Pakistan, she went on to graduate in Music and Visual Arts. For many of her projects at the university, she created exhibits that combined these two elements.

On stage, she does the same, dressing up in costumes such as Native American headdresses and painting her cheekbones in various colors. When combined with a buttery, deep voice that can bring on a storm and the ability to juggle roles on multiple instruments, talent and determination are seen in every song and gesture.

Still, Khan keeps things grounded, always thanking the audience for singing along: “I’m so glad you know these songs. That’s so good.” A wannabe pop princess she is not; a true musician looking to spice up the indie world she is.

The crowd gathered to see her performance was rather large, indicative of her growing fanbase. Coming out in spandex and her trademark face paint, she started off with “Glass”, from her latest album, Two Suns. This dark ballad was the perfect opener; the kind that makes listeners wish it were played first at a live show. Khan exercised her vocal chords to mesmerizing effect, hitting smoky notes along a landscape of intriguing lyrics.

Khan then played an accordion-like instrument on “Trophy”, driving the idea home: “Shoot them down, set them free!” Her voice echoed on the ghostly “What’s A Girl To Do?” After fans close to the stage held up a sign reading, “Please Be Our Mother”, Khan winked in their general direction, then moved into “Prescilla”. This is one of the popiest numbers is Bat For Lashes’ catalogue, but she added a unique flavor to it with a spare solo on something sounding like a harpsichord but resembling a far-off Asian instrument.

“Daniel”, an instant crowd-pleaser and somewhat obvious closer, capped off the set, featuring Mid-eastern sound loops and a singing style that could be characterized as last-breath desperation. An artist grateful for fans and a chance to strut her stuff, Khan bowed generously after the jaw-dropping audible feast.

Big names like Snoop dog and Tool usher in the largest audiences at these fests, but often the more obscure acts are the ones with true gusto for their craft. Hopefully future tours will bring Natasha Kahn closer to a top-billed spot. She deserves it.
