When music critics look back on the current explosion of indie bands in about 20 years, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, the latest incarnation of Wilco, and a handful of others will be remembered as heroes of the genre. But while many of the groups classified as indie create interesting music based around time-tested structures of folk, classic rock and electronic new wave, Animal Collective pull together elements that clash-creating a dizzying blend of sound that bypasses normal, weaves just past predictable, gathers up every significant musical marker your ears have ever witnessed, and spills it all into a tall glass whose contents simultaneously taste familiar and exotic.

Their latest LP, Merriweather Post Pavilion, was widely heralded as one of the year’s best albums, if not the best, when it was released in January. That’s a bold statement for a summer-oriented record let out in the dead of winter, but it is easy to say that this is one of the Collective’s best works.
For live shows, the group likes to step away form their album format, and play a tangled mix of their repertoire, occasionally previewing songs from the customary post-LP EP. Here, they started off in that vein, as a dizzying blend of atmospheric electronica going up and down a major scale, muddled voices and shouts came from the stage. Typical of an Animal Collective performance, there was nothing too obvious to cling to, until a recognizable song cracked through the intriguing madness.
In this case, it was the beginning of “Leaf House” from their warped freak-folk album Sung Tongs. The multi-voiced blues-rock progressions merged into “Guys Eyes” off Merriweather, finding a connection in the synthesizer loops. The switch from song to song was executed gradually, making onlookers guess what would come out next. At the start of the set, this didn’t work as well; a slightly more direct dive into recognizable territory would be welcome.
“Daily Routine” was surprisingly straight forward, until blasts of increasingly louder noise paved the way for the Native American tribal chants of “Fireworks” from the trippy and loud Strawberry Jam. The song jumped in and out of itself multiple times, moving though tempos and time signatures, giving an enticing hint of what may lay in the future for the trio. “Brother Sport” finished the set, while the audience danced like crazed hippies against the backdrop of the Chicago skyline, a large glowing orb reading “Lollapalloza” watching over all, making sure no one was left out of the revelry.
The off-kilter song structures, drones and bitter-sweet melodies Animal Collective produce may be a bit much for some, and can run the risk of sounding pretentious and annoying to beginners. But those who let the sounds wash over them, and can appreciate art in music, undoubtedly see and hear the magic in this truly groundbreaking band. They play off emotions, mix musical boundaries, and take the listener away to a world where something strange can become familiar and comforting.
