Season twelve back in November 1st of 2000 began as every season since, with the annual and always highly anticipated Treehouse of Horror episode. Always a fun Halloween episode, this one include stories of Homer dying after eating broccoli and must perform a good deed before he is allowed through the pearly gates in “G-G-Ghost D-D-Dad”, a parody of Grimm’s Fairy Tales in “Scary Tales Can Come True” and Lisa’s good deed of freeing dolphins from a water park goes awry in “Night of the Dolphin”.
Through the course of twenty-one episodes we see the return of everyone’s favorite evil doer Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) and mobster Fat Tony (Joe Mantegna). Musical guests make their appearance like the legendary guys of The Who complete with John Entwistle get caught up in Springfield’s upheaval when the city spits in two in the episode entitled "A Tale of Two Springfields". The folky American song writer Shawn Colvin pops up for a Bible-themed amusement park story in "I'm Goin' to Praiseland". If that isn’t enough we even have pre-solo mega superstar Justin Timberlake with the rest of the guys of *NSYNC help out when Bart, Nelson, Milhouse and Ralph try to be the next big boy band in "New Kids on the Blecch".
It wouldn’t be a true Simpson season without a ton of guest stars showing their face…or lending their voice. This time around through the course of twenty-one episodes on four discs we have Edward Norton, Michael Keaton, Gary Coleman and even literary giants like Stephen King and John Updike showing up. We even have former Malcolm in the Middle’s Frankie Muniz showing up for a Run, Lola, Run parody in episode eighteen entitled “Trilogy of Error".
Extras
With full seasons of shows making their appearance on DVD in time for their next season premiere, it’s almost surprising that The Simpson’s are so behind in catching up to their current season. That is until you look at all of the bonus material available on every one of these season box sets. The packaging is once again having the disc crammed into these impossible sleeves. It’s inevitable that in removing them you will scratch the discs. Fans have been complaining about this but the makers have yet to listen.
First up, all twenty-one episodes have a commentary track. That is unheard of and may be the only show that has done this box set after box set. The commentary features appearances by Matt Groening, the cast, director, writers and producers and at times is almost more enjoyable then the actual episode. They are a wealth of information and full of funny anecdotes. There are a ton of deleted scenes and hidden easter eggs on each disc. Other bonus features include special featurettes like Illustrated commentary for the “Lisa The Tree Hugger” and the “HOMR” episode, Comic Book Guy: Best. Moments. Ever. featurette, animatics for several episodes, sketch galleries, storyboards and a series of commercials for Nestle USA, Burger King and Red Rooster.
