We’ve seen a resurgence of the animated film in the computer generated age. Where it was once dominated by Disney Studios, Pixar is the studio to now beat. DreamWorks with their Shrek films, has equally managed to win over audience with a successful franchise. Then there’s Twentieth Century Fox who has also managed to win over audiences with their highly successful Ice Age films. The third film, which was released in July and became the second highest grossing animated film of all time, has just arrived on DVD in both standard and Blu-ray editions.

Now in their third installment, the story centers around Ellie (Queen Latifah) and Manny (Ray Romano) as they prepare for parenthood with their first little wooly mammoth. Along for the ride are the usual suspects whom have their own little issues to deal with. Diego (Denis Leary) the saber-toothed tiger is considering leaving the herd after he realizes his skills as a hunter are suffering and he is losing his edge. Sid (John Leguizamo) the sloth is jealous he isn’t having a family of his own and decides to become the father of some eggs that he stumbles upon and assumes are abandoned. However as it often does when Sid is involved, his good intentions have bad consequences. Things quickly turn sour when the eggs turn out to be baby Tyrannosaurus eggs. Before you know it Momma Tyrannosaurus has arrived and is not happy. She grabs her three babies and Sid as well. Manny, Ellie, Crash, and Eddie (Seann William Scott, Josh Peck) follow in hot pursuit and soon find that the icy cave where they have been taken actually has a hidden underground world. In this world, the thought to be extinct dinosaurs are alive and well populating this secret jungle paradise. While on their pursuit, they come across a crazy one-eyed weasel named Buck (Simon Pegg) who helps them in their quest to save Sid.
Of course an Ice Age picture isn’t the same without the adventures of Scrat (Chris Wedge) the sabertooth squirrel, as he continues to pursue an acorn no matter what dangers it puts him in. This time the danger is that of the opposite sex, as a sexy female saber-toothed squirrel named Scratte comes between him and his acorn. Will Scrat give in to his heart or his obsession? Hey you’ll have to watch the film and find out for yourself.
Extras
If you pick up the Blu-ray edition you have plenty of options to watch the film and bonus material. First off you have a standard def DVD edition and a digital copy so you can watch the film wherever you go.
The Blu-ray’s bonus material includes a audio commentary with most of the behind-the-scenes people including co-directors Mike Thurmeier and Carlos Saldanha, character designer Peter DeSève, art director Michael Knapp, and producers Lori Forte and John Donkin. Unfortunately none of the cast participated in it. Although, these are the people that often have the most insightful information on the film and this commentary track is full of entertaining information.
Evolution Expedition is a featurette on the modern day versions of our animated friends that populate the film. Falling for Scratte is a little featurette on creating Scrats new love interest. If that isn’t enough of Scrat you have Scrat Featurettes that clock in about fifteen minutes (that are only available here in standard definition) and then two hilarious Scrat shorts that are in beautiful HD. Buck: From Easel to Weasel has interviews with the voice of Buck the very funny Simon Pegg. Unearthing the Lost World is a very short featurette on the making of the third film. Finally rounding out the extras here is three Fox Movie Channel Featurettes, very raw deleted scenes and a music video.
