When a band classifies their music as avant-garde I tend to be pretty cautious. Not that the music is going to be bad, most often it is almost impossible to properly review, not so with the amazing and innovative Paper Zoo. Their four song EP “We Are Paper Zoo” was truly mind blowing.

The band’s sound defiantly channels old school British rock. From the first few notes of the track “Hollywood Recluse” I felt as if I were listening to a rough cut from the Guess Who or Herman’s Hermits. It’s rare to find a band that can pull off proper psychedelic rock.
Based out of Los Angeles, the band (which has been in the making since most of its members were in their early teens) has just release their first EP. There is something to be said about a group of musicians with such a strong bond and it truly shows through in their music. Each track radiates with a pent up energy and passion. There is no ego in this band, just a love for the music.
Out of the four tracks the best is by far “Laughing Legba.” It is a very layered, multi-sensory song that grabs the listener in and doesn’t let them go. Every single member of Paper Zoo is a professional and light years ahead of many musicians releasing their first album.
But herein lies the problem. The band is so devoted to their influences that sometimes it is hard to tell them apart. When I first heard their music I honestly thought they were some sort of Baby Boomer revival band. I was surprised to learn that they were new on the scene and fairly young as well.
If they are going to have lasting power in the music industry they need to find their own voice and run with it. In the meantime, the members of the band are living every musicians dream. The band has been out on the road touring with Roger Daltrey of The Who. To check them out for your self and you live in Chicago, come out and watch them open up for Daltrey November 2 at the House of Blues.
