When is a concert not just a concert? When it becomes an interactive, surreal experience unlike anything done before. This weekend the Vic Theater will be transformed into a bohemian paradise led by Chicago’s own Poi Dog Pondering.

La Grande Boehme: Featuring Poi Dog Pondering

Vic Theater
Chicago, IL
November 20-21, 2009

La Grande Boehme is the brainchild of Poi Dog’s found Frank Orrall. “Once every couple of years we try and put on a big show for our fans, “ says Orrall “Recently I have become sort of obsessed with the music and culture of the 30s through the 60s and people like Henry Miller, Picasso and Frida Kahlo. So we figured, let’s put on a show that can bring all that together for people.”

Inspired by the aesthetics of Paris in the 1930s, La Grande Revue de Boehme will feature such acts as Mistress Stephanie & Her Melodic Cat. Although not overtly Parisian Mistress Stephanie’s music pulsates with the kind of bohemian coolness that would be right at home in any cabaret.

“We have a lot of our friends coming in to perform for us,” explains Orrall “we brought in the hula dancer Leina’ala and visual artists Luke Savisky.” Joining them will be the musical trio Baliff, a personal favorite of Orrall’s and the visual artist Marco Giovanni Ferrari.

“The Vic Theater is great,” says Orrall “We love playing there and they have a stage that looks very vintage. It was the perfect spot for our show.” Orrall’s goal is to take the audience and, if only for a few nights, transport them into a different state of mind.

Headlining for both nights will be Orrall’s own band, Poi Dog Pondering. “Musically we plan on playing what we normally play, or very similar too it, we are just changing the frame of the sound.” The always-adventurous band has mastered the art of cross-cultural fusion in their albums, this time they have taken it to the streets. La Grande Revue de Boehme is a celebration of art in all its various forms.

So take the chance and try something new. On a weekend when the cold is just starting to rear its ugly head why not step into another place and time with Poi Dog Pondering.
