Sons of Anarchy Rides into Blu-ray Print E-mail

There was a time all we had was the three major networks for our addicting TV habits. Then came cable and it was no longer TV it was HBO. These days the best shows are to be found more and more on cable. One of the best channels out there today is FX. FX has created some of the most ambitious and original shows in the last decade that has put the three networks and even premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime to shame.

Sons of Anarchy: Season One

Special Features

Created by Kurt Sutter
Starring Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Johnny Lewis
Sure we all had our moments of not being able to live without the sordid world of The Sopranos, but the show had a bumpy ride (that to me) was more miss than hit. FX on the other hand has created consistent shows one after another, that is critically acclaimed, but some times get lost in the mix and don’t get the accolades they deserve.

FX has equally created a world of corruption with the anti-hero police officer Vic Mackey on The Shield, whom no matter what wrong path he heads down we still root for him to succeed. How about Denis Leary’s portrayal of an alcoholic fireman post 911 in Rescue Me? It’s sad but the show gets better whenever he gets back on the sauce and starts seeing his dead relatives. It’s not just these sole performances that make us love these shows, it’s the writing and the ensemble cast that makes it such a strong sell and has us coming back for more. Now to add to the list of original programming is the story of a motorcycle gang that runs guns in a small town on the latest offering by FX, Sons of Anarchy.

Sons of Anarchy centers on a motorcycle club and its founding chapter that resides in the fictional Northern California town of Charming. The club known to many as SAMCRO, an acronym of their full name - Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original, takes its relationship to their town very serious. They play both the protector and the intimidator to the quaint town of Charming. SAMCRO has often stepped in when the law has their hands tied and done what is necessary to keep their town safe. Safe from corporate America coming in taking over the Ma and Pa businesses, safe from the town being polluted by serious drugs like meth. Of course that doesn’t mean they are innocent by any means. As ATF agents wait in the wings for them to make a mistake, the members continue to find ways to make money by running guns behind their back. It’s a delicate balance of contradiction that in some ways seems to work for Charming.

Much like The Sopranos, the shows is about family. A family that might do some questionable deeds but a family that takes care of each other no matter what the cost. In particular the show centers around the Club President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and the second-in-command, Jackson "Jax" Teller (Charlie Hunnam). Clay is also married to Jax’s mother Gemma (Katey Sagal) and his father was one of the founding members of the club. Season One begins as Jax is getting ready to become a father of his own and comes across a manuscript written by his late father. In it his father talks about the original goals of the club and that did not include turning it into the thugs it has become. Jax with new eyes is determined to set things right and put them back on the original path even if that means bumping heads with Clay. Sons of Anarchy on paper might not sound like your kind of show. But from the very first episode it will surprise you. It is smart well written and will make you an instant fan.

Extras

Of course we have all thirteen episodes on three discs with commentary on three of the episodes including the Pilot and “Revelator” the season finale. There is a The Making of 'Sons Of Anarchy' Season One, The Ink about many of the tattoos created for the characters in the show, The Bikes highlighting the Harleys in the show and the Casting 'Sons of Anarchy' that includes some of the actual auditions. If that isn’t enough, we have over a half hour of deleted scenes and a gag reel.
