All seventeen episodes of Season 5 are here as we continue to follow Lost’s complex story timeline which is not always an easy feat. This season we have Jack (Matthew Fox) teaming up with the evil leader of the “Others” Ben Linus (Michael Emerson) as they try to reunite the Oceanic Six and get them back to the island. Which is easier said then done with Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and Sayid (Naveen Andrews) on the run from the police, Kate (Evangeline Lilly) is also on the run with baby Aaron to hide the secret she is not his mother and Sun (Yunjin Kim) is on a quest to avenge her husband Jin’s (Daniel Dae Kim) death.
Back on the island the remaining survivors are having issues of their own. The island is jumping erratically through time since Ben “moved the island”. When the island jumps to 1954, Faraday (Jeremy Davies) finds himself faced with the task of defusing a hydrogen bomb. Jin on the other hand appears on the shore, after surviving the freighter explosion, but in 1988 and stumbles onto Danielle Rousseau's science team when they arrived on the island. Locke (Terry O'Quinn) leaves the island by turning the wheel in the frozen chamber and stabilizes the island. One catch of course, some of the survivors and “others” are now catapulted to the ‘70s when the Dharma Initiative was alive and well operating on the island. Sawyer (Josh Holloway), Dr. Juliet Burke (Elizabeth Mitchell), Miles Straume (Ken Leung) and Jin now back with his castaways join the Dharma Initiative after rescuing one of their members, Amy, from the Others. Here they spend three years as part of the Dharma Initiative and it appears they might be getting too comfortable in their new roles.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg of Lost Season 5. How did Locke wind up dead in a wooden box and how are they going to get him back on the island? What is the reasoning for Ben needing to get the Oceanic Six back to the island? Where does the mysterious Jacob play in all of this and is Jack’s father Christian John Terry and Claire (Emilie de Ravin) real or ghosts?
Season 5 may have given us some of these answers by the end of the season but it also gave us plenty of more questions. Time will tell if by the final minutes of Season 6 we will finally feel satisfied with the overall answers to a show that has proven to be innovating, while still being entertaining.
Extras
The full seasons of Lost have always been good including some great bonus material to give you more bang for your buck. All of the bonus material aside from the two commentary tracks can be found on disc five. Make sure you’ve watched the whole season before listening to producers/co-creators Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof who offer up some spoilers with their commentary on the season opener with "Because You Left". Episode number 10 entitled "He's Our You" has commentary with writers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis and they give us a nice behind-the-scenes look at the making of the episode that focuses on Sayid needing to make a decision about the 12-year old Ben.
There are a few Blu-Ray exclusives that include the BD-Live LOST University that allows fans to enroll in a course that will explore the themes and storylines of the television show. The professors will be Naveen Andrews (Sayid), Jorge Garcia (Hurley), Josh Holloway (Sawyer), Daniel Dae Kim (Jin), Yunjin Kim (Sun), Evangeline Lilly (Kate), Terry O'Quinn (Locke), Michael Emerson (Ben), and Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond). I’m not sure of that means they will be the actors or the characters they play. Lost 100 is an almost twenty minute in-depth look with the cast as they reflect on the first 100 episodes.
There’s also plenty of featurettes including Lost on Location, Building 23 & Beyond, An Epic Day with Richard Apert and Making Up For Lost Time. There is a mock-documentary entitled Mysteries of the Universe: The Dharma Initiative, Lost bloopers and deleted scenes all in hi-def.
