Ever since MTV introduced the world to two of the most dysfunctional high school students we have never been the same. Beavis and Butt-head showcase the unique voice of creator Mike Judge (literally) and we have been all the better for it. Although Judge has been successful in the animated realm his attempts in the live action has been a bumpy ride.

These days the film Office Space is up there as one of the best comedies of all time. Yet it was a horrible experience for Judge with the studio trying to change his vision through the course of the filming. Fortunately for us Judge stuck to his guns and Office Space has since become the cult classic it deserves. His live action follow-up didn’t turn out nearly as well. However, the film that originally was supposed to follow Office Space finally saw the light of day in 2009. Extract starting Jason Bateman and Mila Kunis, although not a cult classic waiting to happen as Office Space, still proved Judge could make a successful and funny live action comedy.
Joel Reynolds (Jason Bateman) has everything: he owns the successful Reynold's Extract business, is married to a beautiful wife with a wonderful house to boot. If that isn’t enough General Mills is in the process of making an offer to buy his company that will give him the freedom he has been looking for some time. So why is Joel, the man that seemingly has everything, so unhappy? On the surface everything looks good but in reality Joel is miserable. By the time he gets home his wife Suzie (Kristen Wiig) has already tightened the sweatpants up for the evening. The bathroom is too close to the TV for him to take care of himself. He has an annoying neighbor Nathan (David Koechner) who won’t stop harassing them about going to a dinner at the Rotary Club. He just hired a gigolo to see if his wife will cheat on him. If that all isn’t enough, a recent accident at the company might stop the transaction with General Mills from going through and the employees are in the process of a revolt.
Once again Mike Judge has taken the mundane of every day life and spun funny with it. Jason Bateman has continued on his leading man success post Arrested Development playing the every day guy. Mila Kunis proves her casting in Forgetting Sarah Marshall wasn’t a fluke with her once again adorable presence. Even in this case as a conniving grifter. Along with a all-star cast with memorable performances by Kristen Wiig, Ben Afflect, J.K. Simmons, Gene Simmons, Clifton Collins Jr., Beth Grant and even a appearance by Mike Judge himself.
If you missed it in the theater never fear it’s finally out on standard DVD and Blu-ray. Extract isn’t another Office Space but it’s still an enjoyable film with top notch performances and the kind of humor we expect from the unique talent of Mike Judge.
Extras
Extract is a film that should have a plethora of extras and in this case the bonus material here is a bit disappointing. The Mike Judge's Secret Recipe is your basic behind-the scenes featurette that runs around eleven minutes and is the only bonus material on the standard DVD. It’s not bad and actually is pretty informative but when it’s the only bonus material if you are buying the standard DVD it’s got to leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.
The Blu-ray at least contains five extended scenes and one deleted scene. They are all way too short and too leaves you wanting more. There’s no gag reel, no commentary track or even a theatrical trailer or a digital copy of the film. Too bad there was a lot of potential with the bonus section for this film. May I suggest taking a look at what Judd Apatow and what his colleagues do with their bonus section and follow suit.
