On the eve of budgetary cuts, Ben Kendall’s (Zach Galifinakis) special project of highly trained animal secret agents is in jeopardy of being shut down by the FBI. In order to prove his project is worthy of future financing, he has a secret meeting with Darwin (Sam Rockwell) the team leader that also so happens to be a guinea pig. The two plan an unauthorized mission to infiltrate the home of a former arms dealer turned home electronics and appliance CEO of Saberling Industries. Leonard Saber’s (Bill Nighy) company has recently created a microchip that may have military applications and so far the FBI has made no head way in finding out any proof to these serious allegations. So the team sets out to sneak into Saber’s library, access his computer and download the files with the code name “Clusterstorm”. The mission seems to be a success until the next day when they present their findings to Home Taskforce Director and FBI Agent Kip Killian (Will Arnett) and all they have to show for it appears to be are plans for a coffee maker. Agent Killian instantly pulls the plug on the project and the team scrambles to escape. The team makes it their getaway but finds themselves in a cage at a local pet store. Now they need to find away to get out by either penetrating the lock or getting adopted.
Can they find a way out, solve the mysteries behind the microchips and stay one step ahead of the FBI whom is closing in fast? That’s part of the fun in this well made spy spoof. The film has an all-star cast that includes the additional voices of Penelope Cruz, Nicolas Cage, Jon Favreau, Tracy Morgan, Steve Buscemi.
Extras
Walt Disney Pictures has always been very calculated in the home video market. From having their classic films offered for a limited run to providing a wealth of bonus material from their archives. Now with Blu-rays, Disney has continued to offer a superior product with wonderful bonus material.
The G-Force Blu-ray combo pack includes a three-disc set. Disc one includes the film on a Blu-ray disc that includes a wealth of bonus material. Disc two is a standard def of the film and disc three is a digital copy of the film for your mp3 players.
First off there are several exclusives to Blu-ray. The Cine-Explore With Darwin, Blaster & Their Creator is probably the best and the most ambitious in all of the material here. It is in some ways a picture-in-picture option that pops-up during the feature that provides in-depth background information on the film. However, this is really a documentary within the actual feature film. You also have an option to use this feature without the long video files that take you out of the film and then becomes a standard commentary track (that is also included in the standard def DVD version). The repartee between Darwin, Blaster and the wide variety of people responsible with the film is quite entertaining and worth the time in a second viewing.
Bruckheimer Animated is a three minute featurette that showcases all of Jerry Bruckheimer’s CGI effects in his previous films from the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Transformer films, National Treasure films with of course a special emphasis on G-Force.
Access Granted: Inside the Animation Lab is a behind the scenes with director and CGI master Hoyt H. Yeatman, Jr. on the animation and scene to the screen in making of G-Force.
The rest of the material is also available on the standard def DVD but there’s a lot here. We have G-Farce – Bloopers And Flubs that helps to show how hard it was to act to nothing and puts the faces to the voices of the characters. Penelope Cruz trying to understand the line of asking for a monkey wrench and not a “monkey’s wrench” is pretty adorable. There’s six minutes of deleted scenes, three music videos with "Jump" by Flo Rida, "Ready to Rock" by Steve Rushtoon and "Go G-Force by the rapping cast of the G-Force themselves and backing singer/dancers.
If that still isn't enough, there is Blaster’s Boot Camp a four minute training video hosted by Blast himself that features footage from the film and finally G-Force Mastermind, a featurette with the director and his son on the inspirations in making the feature film.
