Season Twenty for the first time would present the series in beautiful hi-def and include an all new opening sequence. Season Twenty also brought the series tied with the old classic western Gunsmoke as the longest running American primetime series (of course with Season Twenty One - The Simpsons are now the reigning champs).
Since the series had nine episodes in production before the decision to go hi-def, the season did not premiere its new format until episode ten "Take My Life, Please" on February 15, 2009. Bart writes on the chalk board in the HD opening sequence “HDTV is worth every cent,” and you have to admit the new wide screen format brings the show into the modern age.
The Simpsons might be over twenty years young, but the show still manages to deliver a few surprises and plenty of laughs. This season the guest stars continued to pop up with everyone from Anne Hathaway, Ellen Page, Jodie Foster and even an appearance by Kelsey Grammer as the one everyone loves to hate, Sideshow Bob.
Although with all of that said, it’s a shame they decided to rush this box set in time for the latest season premiere. The Simpson up until now has been quite behind bringing the full seasons to DVD and for a very good reason, every box set has been chocked full of bonus materials and well worth the wait. Up until now, the studios were only up to season twelve. However, most likely to cash in on their recent format change into HD and wide screen, they understandably wanted to offer the show on Blu-ray. Fantastic idea and the shows have never looked, better but does that mean the consumer should lose out as a result?
The Simpsons is an American institution and will now go down in the history books as the longest show in prime time. Matt Groeing struck gold when he created this lovable but flawed family. Since that time the show has created a legacy that can be seen every where and still continues to make us laugh.
Extras
From commentary tracks on every episodes, deleted scenes, Matt Groeing’s special introduction and even special packaging, season after season The Simpson DVD’s have proven worthy of your investment. However, the release of season twenty changes everything. There is literally only ONE bonus feature. Not only is there only one but it’s only a sneak peek of it. In honor of the twentieth season, The Simpsons asked documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock to host a celebration of the anniversary. The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special - In 3-D! On Ice! premiered on January 10, 2010 just two days before the complete season was released on DVD and Blu-ray so why wasn’t it included in this boxset?
One would concluded that as they continue to release the seasons they will eventually catch up to season twenty and do a proper release. In the meantime, if you just want the full season on HD then this set will not disappoint.
