Drew Barrymore is Hollywood royalty. The Barrymore dynasty includes the likes of stage and screen actors John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore and Drew herself. She first graced the screen at only eleven months old in the 1980’s film, Altered States. Of course it was her appearance in E.T. when America first took notice and fell in love with the adorable newcomer. Along with being a CoverGirl model, movie producer and United Nations Ambassador, Drew can now add director to her resume. The roller derby movie Whip It, staring Ellen Page, is Drew’s directorial debut and is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Whip It

Special Features

Directed by Drew Barrymore
Written by Shauna Cross
Starring Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Zoe Bell, Alia Shawkat
Rated PG-13

High School student Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) is quickly losing her mind and her identity in the small little Texas town of Bodeen. She already doesn’t feel she fits into school and the beauty pageant’s her mother makes her compete in is only making things worst. During a shopping excursion to the nearby town of Austin, Bliss receives a flier for an upcoming roller derby. Accompanied by her best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat), Bliss’s eyes are open to a life of possibilities outside her podunk town. A chance meeting with one of the players convinces Bliss to prove her roller-skating abilities at an audition. and not only successfully lies about her age but lands a place in the Hurl Scouts.

Bliss quickly earns her new name as the small but agile, Babe Ruthless. Bliss quickly learns that in order to make it as a scorer she has to be aggressive and take charge, a notion that she also interjects into her real life as well. Can Bliss lead the Hurl Scouts to victory and finally break the spell of being number two? Not if her main rival Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis) has anything to say for it.

A film about a high school girl turned roller derby chick might not sounds like your kind of film. Yet this well written story might surprise you. With a strong cast that includes Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Zoe Bell and even Drew herself, Whip It is a strong debut by anyone’s standards.

Extras

It’s kind of a surprise the film does not come with a commentary track by Drew Barrymore. It would have been interesting to hear her perspective of directing her first film. Regardless, the package includes enough extras to make it worth the price on Blu-ray. First off we have a digital copy of the film that is only available if you buy the Blu-ray. There are over sixteen minutes worth of deleted scenes including an alternate opening and an additional subplot that was later scrapped from the final film.

Fox Movie Channel presents Writer´s Draft: Shauna Cross of Whip It is another Blu-ray exclusive on the writer of the film. A tad bit short clocking in just a little over three minutes. Still, it’s nice to see the person behind the story. And last there is a soundtrack spot included here as well.
