Jay Mohr got his first break on television like many comedians before and after him as a not-ready for prime time player on Saturday Night Live. Since then in-between movie roles, he has made regular appearances on many television shows including Scrubs, Ghost Whisperer and Monk. Mohr is now taking the lead role in his new sitcom Gary Unmarried and the first season is now available on a three DVD set.

Gary Unmarried: The Complete First Season

Special Features

Created by Ed Yeager
Starring Jay Mohr, Paula Marshall, Ryan Malgarini, Kathryn Newton, Keegan-Michael Key, Brooke D'Orsay, Jaime King, Ed Begley, Jr.

Gary Brooks (Jay Mohr) is still getting use to the single life, now just three months after the divorce is official. It’s not easy especially since he has to deal with his ex-wife Allison Brooks (Paula Marshall), on a weekly and more and more on a daily basis since they share custody of their two teenage children. The one thing that is going alright is his painting business. Now living alone, Gary is trying to start dating again. His first post-divorce fling turns right into a relationship with Vanessa (Jaime King) who also has a son from a previous marriage. If that’s not enough to handle, Gary’s ex is suddenly engaged to their former marriage counselor Dr. Krandall (Ed Begley, Jr.).

In time, Gary is back in the dating scene dating everyone from his kid’s teacher to a friend of Allison’s when they attend a re-new your vows weekend get-together. However, even during all of this there still seems to be a faint spark with Gary and Allison. When Dr. Krandall breaks off the wedding will this finally give Gary and Allison the moment they need to rekindle their feelings?

Jay Mohr steals the show and is perfect as the father and the single parent in this very funny and well written sitcom. The chemistry between Mohr and Marshall is a perfect television match and the two play off of each other perfectly. Of course we know the two can never get together for a long period of time otherwise the name of the show doesn’t make any sense. Gary Unmarried is now well into it’s second season but you can always download them on iTunes after watching the first season on DVD.

Extras

Not a lot of extras here but a few to keep you interested after you complete the first season. First up we have a collection of bloopers from season one. Tuesday On The Set With Jay is a day in the life with Jay Mohr as he comically takes us through the behind the scenes of the show. It’s actually quite funny and worthy your time. The Chemistry of Comedy is a fifteen minute featurette on the show that gives you a true feel of what it’s like to produce a sitcom in from of a live television audience. Finally there’s Planet Begley that I was hoping was about the wonderful world of comedy with Begley - it’s not. Instead it feels very much like a PSA about his eco-friendly campaign that he’s been on since the 70’s. A great cause but feels a little out of place in this setting.
