When you’re working with good looks and a pretty big set of balls, the opportunities are endless. Encouraged by our Redwalls VIP success, we joined the friends and family of Dashboard Confessional atop some scaffolding backstage for their first appearance this year.
While “A Mission, A Mark, A Brand, A Scar” is one of the rare albums I enjoy from beginning to end, I really can’t handle seeing Dashboard live. Why? Because I didn’t pay 44.50 (or $115, in this case) to listen to some fat girl with a lisp shout the words to “Several Ways to Die Trying” directly into my ear.
It’s not a secret that Chris Carabba is more of an instrumental live performer; while some might appreciate his willingness to silently play karaoke tracks, many fans are disappointed when they finally get to see the band in concert. I love the passion and gentle earnestness in Carabba’s voice far too much to let him just stand there. And that is what made Dashboard’s show so good – he sang the entire thing.
Crowd favorites like “Hands Down” sounded perfect: a little less polished than on the album and enhanced by the voices in the audience. Personally, I would have liked to hear some of their lesser-played songs, but it’s important to remember that most sets at Lollapalooza were no more than 30 minutes.
I’m sure many of the bands played their more popular tracks because that’s what people paid to see…I can respect that. Coolest moment of the set – an unexpected segue into a cover of “Teenage Dirtbag.” Her name is Noelle? My name is Julie, and I’ve had dreams about the way you guys performed that Saturday. Definitely a ‘had to be there’ experience for any Dashboard fan. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
