Burlesque is an interesting art form. Since its origins during the turn of the last century it has undergone a wide variety of changes to both its mood and intent. Troupes exist all over the world and Chicago is no exception with each having their own unique twist on the concept. From the punk rock to the more traditional vaudevillian route, one can find just about any sort of burlesque out there if you just know where to look.

One of the best places to find professional burlesque troupes in the city of Chicago is the Debonair Social Club, home to the No-Tell Motel every Wednesday night. Each week the club hosts a range of cutting-edge performers including Angela Eve’s Parlor Burlesque. The troupe was first introduced to the Debonair Social Club in 2008 as a part of Chicago’s first burlesque festival, the Twisted Tassel. After the success of the event No-Tell Motel was created to cater to the growing burlesque scene in Chicago.

This Wednesday night marks the one-year anniversary of the revolutionary pairing and Angela Eve will be there to ring in the celebration. The event will be called “Please Forward My Mail to the Chelsea NYC, Room 205” and is focused around the many artistic trailblazers that stayed in the historic hotel.

“A lot of movers and shakers from the punk rock and glam world stayed there,” explains Eve “Jimi Hendrix and Arthur C. Clarke stayed there, the Ramones lived there for awhile, Patti Smith…it was sort of transient art rocker place.”

Forward My Mail will be a performance art piece that fuses live music, art and burlesque into a night that could only have come from Angela Eve. “I’m trained at Second City in acting and character work and I am also a visual artist,” says Eve. She approached the production like a play, set pieces were made and each girl in her troupe was cast for a specific character role.

Also taking part in the night will be Scott Lucas of Local H fame with his band The Cold Space. Although the band will play a two-hour set before the burlesque begins, they will also be providing the soundtrack for all of Angela’s presentations.

The burlesque community in Chicago is growing at a rapid rate. Angela Eve and her troupe remain pioneers of the field. Take a trip this Wednesday night to the No-Tell Motel and witness the revolution for yourself.
