The 4 piece band originally from Melbourne, Australia has just began their lengthy Spring/Summer tour to promote their debut album “Conditions”, released back in June last year. Formed by lead vocals Dougie Mandagi, Jonathon Aherne on bass, Lorenzo Sillitto on lead guitar/keyboards and Toby Dundas on drums, Temper Trap made it to the Metro on a school night for a short but solid hour set.

With a pleasant, unpretentious demeanour, front man Dougie led the gig with the opener “Rest” as the crowd enthusiastically cheered their entrance on stage. Even though the venue was not sold out, those in attendance seemed to be quite familiar with Temper’s Trap material. The band performed all of their nine previously released songs and one new one, with special mention to the hit “Sweet Disposition”, which was played towards the end of the concert and got most of the cheering and applause.
Who hasn’t heard “Sweet Disposition” by now with it being part of the “500 Days of Summer” movie’s soundtrack of last year. It has also been featured in various TV commercials around the world, which can only have helped boost the band’s worldwide exposure. Temper Trap has garnered such a following these days that pretty much all of their shows in the UK are already sold out several weeks in advance. With its sensitive, but uplifting lyrics, U2-like guitar riffs and drums influence, “Sweet Disposition” is a catchy, easy tune to enjoy and it can quickly get under your skin.
Other tunes of the night included the beautiful “Soldier On”, with its explosive crescendos and “Down River”, where other band members sang along with Dougie. This collaboration provided a sound resemblance and the same kind of vibe that the Canadian band Arcade Fire delivers live.
Towards the end of the show, Dougie exchanged his guitar for a drum set up in the middle of the stage for the fun “Drum Song”. Half way through the song, he poured a bottle of water on it. As he jammed, spreading all the water into the air illuminated by the light, it created a beautiful visual effect. It was simple, yet quite effective little feat that got the audience up and cheering again during their grand finale.
The opening act was up to the Danish band Kissaway Trail, who has been touring with Temper Trap in the USA. The officially 5-piece band had a very animated 6th addition that played the tambourine with so much gusto that he got the crowd pleading for a “tambourine solo” half way through the concert. The band played for a very attentive audience and delivered a fine performance filled with synth which included their arguably most known tunes “61”, “Beat Your Heartbeat” and “SDP”. The Kissaway Trail is releasing their first album “Sleep Mountain” on April 20th.
Just as most of Temper Traps’songs do, the concert itself seemed to have happened in crescendo mode: it started slowly and mellow and end on a high uplifting thunderous note with the two encores, “Rabbit Hole” (new song) and "Science of Fear". It was a fine Wednesday night of entertainment that one left with the sweetest of dispositions.
